Hello,

On the History Cold Case programme on BBC2, there where cases where DNA could not be extracted, yes, it does depend on the condition.

Didn't realise the skeleton was 8,000 years old, you can check Teeth now, for an Isotope reading, it can pinpoint where the person grew up.

It is all fascinating stuff.

We may be of Different cultures, but we are the same people.

As previously said, My knowledge is from watching quality TV programmes, and having a interest, in getting my DNA tested one day.

From DNA testing, it is possible to identify if you have Celtic, Anglo/Saxon and Norwegian Viking Origins on your Maternal or Paternal side, but that is only two lines, there are so many ancestors inbetween, that the test can't pick up, so it is only part of a persons make up, and not the full story of who you are.

I think there was a school Teacher from Somerset who was related on the Maternal side to a 2,000 year old skeleton near where he lived, so maybe the apples do not fall to far from the tree.

I think I recall Danish (The jutes) being indistinguishable from Angle and Saxon DNA, since they where from Northern Germany and Norman DNA couldn't readily be identified I think.

Hello Ken,

Found it!, Thank you.

There is a cemetery no to far away, which is my next line of enquiry.

What I meant by Standalone, as in not part the army barracks detention block.

My Understanding is that 10 to 20 % of the population was actually of Saxon Blood and that those Romano-Celts that had lived here for a thousand years or more, just started learning the Saxon customs and lanuage etc.

It would appear from watching digging for Britain that not all Romans left either, so I am sure there are people descended from Roman Soldiers, from North Africa out there somewhere.

At least that what the TV programmes I have watched has suggested, and one of them talked about genocide with the Jutes being all but wiped out I think.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Kate Wilkinson, Defender Rd on 1911 Census?
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 17:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could check the 1911 census for me please, for a Kate Wilkinson, and residence is Defender, this brings up two Kate Wilkinson, who I assume to be Mother and daughter.

I have two questions:

Was the Number is the House listed?
Was Kate Wilkinson listed as a Widow?

A Great x2  Uncle, Joseph Wilkinson died in 1910, and his address at the time of burial is given as Defender Rd.

I can find nothing on FreeBMD for a marriage, as of yet.

No relatives seem to have lived in Defender Rd to my knowledge, so perhaps he may have been married at the time of his death, and if his wife then remarried it would never have been known.

I found a great resource on  http://www.plimsoll.org/Southampton/streetdirectories/default.asp and in 1912, and a Mrs Wilkinson is listed living in 16, Defender Rd, Itchen, Southampton.

regards

Kliffy

Hello,

My Great x 2  Grandad George STOCKS was court martialed in 1884, in Co Cork.

He was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, but this commuted to 2 years.

Would anyone know if there where any Military Prisons in Ireland, or would he have been transferred back to one in England, where he was from.

He had re enlisted illegally three times after serving 6 years in the 1/14 foot regiment. he had used two different surnames, then his real surname.

I have not been able to find him on the 1891 or 1901 census, but he could have been using a different surname.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any spare time in the Portsmouth archives, would they be able to check the Portsmouth News for the Month of April, for any information relating to the sinking of the Yacht "Nymph".

The Hampshire Telegraph was checked, and 2 days around the 26th by the archive staff, but no joy.

Robert Henry Wilkinson lived at 31, Hercules Street and had been in Portsmouth since his mother's death in 1885. He joined the Royal Navy Reserve in October 1885, and had completed in the America's Cup in 1903, so was an experienced yachtsman. He had also worked with his Father who was a Master Mariner.

According to the Board of Trade Wreck report,  the "Nymph" was about 10 years old, around 10 tonnes, not registered, and had a crew of three, it was a Cutter. It was sailing from Newhaven back to Portsmouth with a load of Ballast, and says the Ship had not been heard of since sailing on 25th March. The Master is lister as R H Williamson, but perhaps this was Wilkinson?.

The Owner is listed as WHP Ward, Southsea.

The Naval Record reports that he was supposed drowned whilst serving on yacht 'Nymph' which is supposed to have been lost off Selsey, on or about 26th March 1905. which would place the yacht further along the coast.

Ideally I suppose I am after more information as to what happened, and would assume there should have been some sort of newspaper article at least.

Robert was married with five children, but I can't seem to find his eldest son, Robert who was born in 1889, he is on the 1891 aged 2, and 1901 aged 12, but does not seem to be on the 1911 census, it is not inconcivible that he may have been on the 'Nymph' with Robert.

Regards

Kliffy.
