Family History Beginners Board / Re: Charlotte ann rumble
« on: Tuesday 18 October 16 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi K,
Is the 1861 from the transcript, I have the two younger children as Sophia and David...

There were also a couple of Henry's, a big gap, then the James and Charlotte shown in the 1871 census, living with now grown up and married Sophia [Warwick].  Charlotte snr married again after being widowed in 1864 and had Albert in 1874, will have to have a rummage as don't have a note to hand about her second marriage.  She moved to Cheam, Surrey with the younger children - no idea why, would be interesting to know what the attraction was.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Catholic Register

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the 7 sacraments of the Catholic church, an alternative name for confession.  Confession is encouraged around Lent were there more 'Rec' entries in March/April?  Catholics would be/are obliged to go to confession if they had committed a mortal sin so maybe this was a way of keeping a tally of who had been up to what!

The Common Room / Re: Reuse name of dead child?
« on: Thursday 18 July 13 20:36 BST (UK)  »
It could also be a practical thing, if a family held a cottage or lands from the Lord of the Manor there would usually be three 'names' on the documentation, including one or two children.  If they wanted to change any of the 'names' because a child had died this would require a fee to be paid to the Lord, so it made sense to just call another child by the same name and avoid the cost.

Mulvey? Maybe  :-\

Or if the downward stroke at the end comes from the name underneath Milne?

The Lighter Side / Re: Ancestors occupations
« on: Friday 12 July 13 23:00 BST (UK)  »
Parish records, such as baptism and burial entries, often but not always include father's occupation.  If your ancestors left any wills this will also usually include occupation.  Manorial records are another good source if any survive for the areas you are interested in.

The Common Room / Re: Thomas Townsend of Chadlington - next steps
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 18:47 BST (UK)  »
What was Thomas's occupation, possible that there might be relevant apprentice info somewhere or might give a clue to a particular area/group of Townsends?  Think you also need to bear Robert Townsend in mind too, if he was the sponsor for the marriage licence he is likely to have been a close relative, father, uncle etc so worth following up to see if you can find them together at some point.  I would also look to see if there are any manorial records surviving for Chadlington as these can be useful source for other relatives/other property transactions in the area.  Interesting that both bride and groom were from/residing in Chadlington but not married there...

Hi Loulou,
I've sent you a PM, be interested to hear if you have come to the same conclusions as I have, not easy to piece it all together from wills!  Look forward to hearing from you,

I'm pretty sure it's a 'k' before the 'l' and would read it as Na['g' or possibly smudged 'c']kloughrim
