Northumberland / Re: 1920's Marriage Records, Newcastle, missing?
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 01:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. In the middle of a house move and it been a bit hectic!!

Alpinecottage, thank you *so* much for your help. I'm using Ancestry, and none of the December 1925 images seem to line up correctly (for example, the "S" pages start on "Thomas, Sarah A." so I think something has gon wrong there, hence why I didn't find this sooner!

I had found a Smurthwaite in Carlisle, but assumed it wasn't the Smurthwaite I needed as I thought that side of the family was purely North-East based. I can now get the marriage certificate with your help... a massive thank you!

Thanks for the help with Thomas Hall too, this too has proved to be really helpful! I'm out of my rut! For the moment, anyway!

Best wishes,

Ben

Thanks for the reply!

I thought that too (she could have been a widow, I thought).

I found a marriage between a Joseph Kirtley and an Elizabeth Kail in Quarter 3, 1917 in Sunderland. Not sure if they gave their middle names when getting married. I know from doing ym own tree that sometimes they were omitted!!

I chased this lead up somewhat, but I couldn't find a previous Smurthwaite/Kail wedding, annoyingly!

It's quite frustrating!!!

Northumberland / 1920's Marriage Records, Newcastle, missing?
« on: Saturday 05 September 09 00:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Not sure if this has already been asked, but I'm having a right old time trying to find some marriages in Northumberland (Newcastle/Tynemouth etc.)... I'm wondering if there are some missing or incorrectly transcribed indeces from the 1920s that anyone knows about?

I'm trying to find a marriage between Elizabeth Jane Smurthwaite and Joseph Kirtley (neither are particularly common surnames!)... their first child was born in 1927 so I initially looked through just the 20s, but I have ended up checking ALL dates, to no avail.

My second case is a Hall/Hoper marriage in again the 20s. I'm trying to eliminate some John Halls and Thomas Halls (very common names by the looks of it). I think the Thomas Hall I'm after has a mother whose maiden name was Hoper (he was born in 1927) and his dad's name (from Thomas' marriage certificate in the 50s) is John Hall. However, I can't find a John Hall/Hoper wedding, or even a John Hall/+ other wedding which would correlate to any of the Thomas Halls from 1927.

I hope this makes sense and that someone could shed some light on it all!

I understand that "common-law marriages" were commonplace, but I would have thought people would have "made it official" more often than not by the 1920s! If they were in a "common-law marriage" the "wife" still take her "husband's" surname?

I looked on the census and found an Ernest Davies, but inthis case, born in 1892. His father was Thomas Davies, who was a potter, as was noted on the marriage certificate.

As being a Potter isn't exactly rare in Staffs, I looked elsewhere, but noticed that the address on this census record was East View, which was also on the marriage certificate! So they stayed in the same address for 20 years!

I've been highly surprised at the inaccuracies on some of the census records!!

Ta for all the suggestions!

Would the profession be exactly the same? I'm going to look into it and get to you!

There's no siblings that I know of, and none that I can recall. The only one I have ever heard mentioned was Uncle Percy, but he was the brother of Ernest Davies born in 1921.

As all of the family on my grandfather's side stayed in Staffordshire, and he'd moved to Swinton, I think there was little contact between the Swinton family and the "ancestral" family in Hanley, so there is a distinct lack of info!

Lancashire / Coal Mine/Factory Photographs
« on: Monday 15 January 07 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for some photos of Swinton and Pendlebury's coal mines and mills.

I've managed to find some pictures of Agecroft Colliery in 1983 from BBC's website. I was trying to find some photos, simply to see some of the places where my ancestors worked. I'm not sure which collieries they worked in, but I'm pretty sure it would have been Newtown or Moss.

However any photos of the old mines and factories of Swinton and Pendlebury would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of any websites etc. that might be handy? It is unfortunate that the mining museum in Buile Hill closed down!!

I'm having problems with working out one of my family members! I'm hoping someone can offer some advice!

I've found my grandfather's parents as being Ernest Davies and Clara Whalley.

They married in January 1921 in Stoke-on-Trent, my grandfather being born in December of the same year.

At the time of marriage, Ernest was 24 and Clara was 25. I've had no problems tracing Clara's family, but Ernest has proved to be tricky. On the marriage certificate, it syas his father's name is Thomas Davies.

When I look up Ernest Davies (b. 1896/7) together with Thomas Davies as his father on Ancestry, I get a myriad of results. I don't know how to work out which one is *my* Ernest, and seeing as both grandparents have died, there is no-one available to consult!  :-\

What can I do? I've attached a screen shot of the possible candidates from Ancestry, with the English and Welsh 1901 census info...

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Look up for Thomas & Wallwork & Doyle
« on: Tuesday 04 July 06 19:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm a bit new to all this and I've already come accross a stumbling block!

On my maternal side, I'm looking for information on one Ellen Wallwork (nee Thomas) born 1898. Her parents were Noah Thomas and Catherine Thomas in Swinton. She married a Mr. Wallwork (I don't know his name), and three children, Jean Wallwork (died at 15), Brenda Wallwork and Nora Wallwork. There were more children, but I've been told they died. I'm looking for Mr. Wallwork's name, D.O.B. and the date they both got married.

As for the Doyles (the paternal side), I have a gap I can't close. My GGm, Mary Agnes Doyle (nee Ralph) married John Doyle in 1934. I'm having problems finding John Doyle's parents. I don't know his age or date of death unfortunately. However, I remember my Grandad saying they lived around the Silk Street area, and upon looking at this area in the 1901 census, there is a Michael Doyle of 42 years at no. 68. I want to see if they are any relation, as Michael came over from Ireland.

Sorry to waffle but I got some good info in I hope.

Hope someone can help!
