« on: Saturday 17 October 15 03:35 BST (UK)  »
Dear Listers,
Trying to find some information regarding my husband's Ancestor JOSEPH BOYCE,
born c1758 in Cork, Ireland.

He at one stage ended up in England, Devon, where he married Margaret Lakeman 4/09/1798
They had 6 children born from 1799 to 1810.

I would love to find his parents and siblings in Ireland.
With thanks,
Sieglinde Boyce, Australia.

Devon / Joseph Boyce perhaps born in Devon?

Dear Listers,
I am more and more wondering if JOSEPH BOYCE was born in Devon, rather as someone
told me Ireland.

He married MARGARET LAKEMAN 4/09/1798 at Stoke Demarel, Devon.

I believe the first child they had, William John Boyce born 1799 and baptised in Plymouth St. Andrews...was my husband's Ancestor.

Would love to get some advice one way or the other.
with thanks,
Sieglinde Boyce.

Devon / Margaret Lakeman

Dear Listers,
Trying to find details of MARGARET LAKEMAN...she married 4th September 1798
at Stoke Demerel.  So perhaps she was born there.
I do not have a single detail about her except that she married a JOSEPH BOYCE,
he was apparently born in Cork, Ireland.
They had the following children:
William John....1799
James.............1801
Catherine........1803
Mary...............1805
Elizabeth.........1808
Joseph............1810.

I have not been successful in finding any children except the William born 1799
apparrently in Plymstock Devon.  So perhaps the other children were also born there.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Sieglinde, Australia.

Here we go again,
First of all some researcher had sent me the DEVON PAPER PLEASE...from an article which
had been published in the South Australian TROVE Nespaper.
Yes the 1841 is about William Boyce Senior.
He is also listed in the 1851 Census living in Rattery and a widower with 2 children
living with him Sarah born 1845 ...and John Richard 1847.
In the 1871 census he is still living in Rattery..he died 1876...76 years.
His second wife had been Elizabeth Trust Eastleigh.
William Boyce Senior's baptism record Plymouth St Andrews 5/12/1799 son of Joseph Boyce
and Margaret (Lakeman) which I have found out since.
As you can see it is a rather big muddle with not a single 100% lead that my husband's
Ancstor came from this family.
Sieglinde.

By the way forgot to mention that on WJB death certificate it asked for mother's maiden
name..which had also been left as a blank.

The informant had been Matron E. Burklia, he may have been in a coma and not able
to give any details.  He had been admitted to the Broken Hill Hospital.
It has been a puzzle for so many years...and I may never find out, unless someone
related to him replies to this site.
Sieglinde.

Dear Listers,
I am so touched by your quick replies.
First of all...yes...I had been aware that at the 2 marriages of William John Boyce...it had
listed as his father also a William.
And yes..I do have his death certificate. Before I got it people were raving on about how much
information there was on it...but not on WJB.
Where it said: how long in the Colony, which would have helped me with his arrival there was
nothing.  Also no name of his wife. It just said he was born in England.

If Sarah Andrews was his mother, then Elizabeth the grandchild listed was WJB sister.
She married March Quarter 1861 a Richard Emmet Totness District. Rattery.
Also on the 1861 census it shows her and new husband living with WJB Senior at Rattery.

William John Boyce Senior had been the son of Joseph Boyce apparently born in
Cork Ireland??

As far as I know Sarah Andrews only had another sibling which was a sister Mary.
Mary Andrews was married to Thomas Barker/Barter and her two children were also staying
with their grandfather in the 1841 census.
On Mary's wedding register - as a witness was Sarah Boyce this could have been her sister.
The Barker wedding was Dec. 1835.

As I mentioned before I have not a single thread which brings it all together.
Would you mind having another look at the second wedding listed for 1838 and send it to me.
Many thanks,
Sieglinde.

Devon / William John Boyce

Dear Listers,
For the last 14 years I have had a "brickwall" and not sure about the one that I have
sort of "claimed" as my husband's.
The previous 10 years I had requests on the English Genforum. Then someone sent me
a death notice of WJB from 1888 and it mentioned: DEVON PAPERS PLEASE.  So I am
presuming this is where he came from.

Will start from when he was living in South Australia and marrying a MARY TABRAHAM
HAWKES 1st Oct 1862...They had 9 children, Mary died 31/10/1883, the youngest child
Lottie May was born 1881.  By the 7th oct 1884 WJB had married again a Ann Hall (nee Scott)
she was a widow with a number of children.
William John Boyce ended up working in Broken Hill, NSW have not been able to trace any
details.  He apparently died 20/09/1888, burried as a Pauper age 53 years.
Would appreciate any help that you could give me.

Once Devon was mentioned had a number of Researchers on the Devon Genforum suggest
that the WJB was the child of Sarah Andrews born 6 April 1834... who later that year had
married a William John Boyce.
I have not been able to find him on any ship coming to Australia by 1862. Have tried WA
of course SA and Victoria. Have tried various spellings as well.

Then even thought he might have come out under Andrews but no success.
Would love to either find the right family for WJB or "claim" Sarah Andrews born c1815 as
his mother.
many thanks,
Sieglinde, Australia.

Devon / Re: William Boyce & Sarah Andrews

Good morning,
It is very sweet of you wanting "closure" regarding William John Boyce.
Briefly, this "hopefully" is my husband's Ancestor.
After 10 years of searching for WJB on the England Genforum....had found an article in
the South Australian papers: for his death, "DEVON PAPERS PLEASE". So this had been my first hint
that he perhaps had come from Devon.
Even now after all those years have never found him coming out on any ship..have searched
WA, Victoria etc.
Briefly I will fill you in and the William John Boyce who was my husband's Ancestor.
As I do not know what year he arrived from England his life which I have traced in SA
starts when he married MARY TABRAHAM HAWKES...1st October 1862 in Adelaide.
He had 9 children by 1881.
On the 7th October 1884 he married for a second time Ann Hall (nee Scott). She was also
a widow with a number of children..they never had a child together.
Eventually dear WJB ended up in Broken Hill, NSW..I presume working in the Mines.
Have searched so much but found nothing.
Even searched for school records as William youngest daughter Lottie May was only 3 years
when her mother died...and from memory Ann's youngest was also around this time.
William and Ann were only married for 3 years...he died in Broken Hill 20/9/1888 and
was burried in a paupers grave, he was only 53 years old.
Such a sad story..never found out if some of the children moved with him and wife Ann to
Broken Hill or they stayed behind in Adelaide.
You see, if I could have found his ship arrival would have made searching that much easier.
I have even searched court records because of the following.
A relation who married WJB grandson told cousins years later that when her father-in-law
and husband died she found some paper work which according to her: "you would not want
to know about".,..so she promptly destroyed them all. Which made us wonder if perhaps he
had some prison record in his past..we will never know.
We as researchers in our family "nearly cried" when we found out that she had destroyed
all the paper work.
So now we come to the connection with the Andrews family...all of the researchers who had
replied to me came to the conclusion that the WJB born to Sarah Andrews was my husband's
Ancestor.
Now wonder what conclusions you will come to.
Have a lovely day...it it 9.25 am here.
Thank you so very much for perservering with my family.
Sieglinde.
