Travelling People / Re: Lane Family
« on: Saturday 30 September 23 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Actually, I remember records for a Gardiner family in Wellington Heath, Ledbury, when looking at the censuses a good while ago. I can't atest for sure their ethnicity, but mine and many others were certainly Romany families working as ag labourers around the Herefordshire Hop Yards. I'm told by local historians that they came to the area likely as Quarryworkers or at least squatting around there and were giving the opportunity to permantely settle by the lords of the land, because they had become vital to the areas labourforce.

Many thanks. That could potentially be very useful to help find my 'missing' Gardner (If I remember rightly I had various options for him but no clue as to which one he may potentially be).

Sorry, rather a late reply as I've not been on rootschat for ages!

I know Lane can be a Romany surname, as can Smith and Gardiner as I have these in my family tree. I believe Harding can also.

I'd be interested to hear if you have any Gardner/Gardiner/Gardener related to your Lanes. Although the confirmed evidence I have on mine is all from the South East of England (Surrey, London, Kent etc)  :)

Hi
Im not assuming they are just researching to see if the Lanes from that area were connected or not to mine lots of records of Lanes from Cotswolds being Travellers and as my Clarkes were i was just interested to see if any of the Families theu married into were also Romany or not surnames such as Smith Archer Mason Green Harding Webbs Gardiner James etc to name a few
Many Thanks
Dunc

I think these names on the memorial were from the travelling community:

Arthur Gardener - b. 1899, son of William and Louisa Gardener, he was a "golf caddie" before the war.

John Gardener - b. 1892, details as above. He was a "golf caddie" too.

Thanks for the info. Arthur and John Gardner are both in my family tree (I'm descended from William's brother Noah).

Hi Cathay. Just noticed your message to me on Snowy's thread. Sorry I've been away from RootsChat for a while and lost my log in during the house move, computer change etc. Just found it and now I'm back! Still interested to see if my Gardners have a connection to Snowyw's but haven't done any new research for a good while!

Not sure if any help but found this

1841 there is a Love Gardner b 1766 Gloucestershire living with a family
 in Keynsham Sound well Mangotsfield
 Other people listed
BRACEY, Hannah F 70 1771  Gloucestershire
BRACEY, Ann F 50 1791  Gloucestershire
BRACEY, Elizabeth F 30 1811  Gloucestershire
BRACEY, Eliza F 8 1833  Gloucestershire
BRACEY, John M 5 1836  Gloucestershire

Very interesting.  I have a John Gardner, birth abt 1824 in Gloucestershire, England which I've been unable to verify as the name John is too common.  He's a 'bit out of the way' birth location wise to Mary Ann Warn, his wife, born abt 1827 in Seal, Kent, England so there must have been some travelling between the south east and south west.

Do you know where Keynsham Sound is?  I know where Keynsham is and Mangotsfield.  Keynsham is in North Somerset and I don't think has ever been Gloucestershire.  Mangotsfield is Bristol so probably once was Gloucestershire.  Would be interesting to see those parish records!

Hi Tiggi

There were  a family of Gardner who were travellers married into Lane/Smith/Warne that were travellers around the Surrey and Kent areas.
Mitcham Surrey seemed to be a favourite place for families

That's the ones I am descended from  ;D

Hi Lemmey
I was so excited to find travellers in my tree - but they are such a problem to pin down!  ;D ;D ;D
They are!  ;D

I would love to find out where Daniel's father James (c1720ish) came from (possibly Gloucestershire???) but more likely Kent.  Also where Love came from.
I have been totally unable to get any further information on John Gardner (1824).  Those with unusual names can be much easier to trace once you have actually found out what their name is!  No Loves in my tree unfortuantely so can't be of any help there.

You never know....we may be related!!
Highly likely I should imagine even if it turns out to be very very distantly  :)  I have met a few distant relatives on here and it was down to help on this forum I first got my Romany family tree started  ;D

Are you on Ancestry?  If so message me and you can take a look at my Gardners to see if that is any help now or in future with your own research.

Hi Snowy

My 3rd great grandmother was Mary Ann Warn/e who was born Seal (Deal?) Kent, 1827.  Her husband was John Gardner/Gardiner (c1824) who I have as born in Gloucestershire but looking at my tree marriages were usually between families who travelled together and I would consider it highly likely that there were Gardners in Kent which is where a lot of my family seem to originate from or lived in Kent/Surrey/Sussex areas.

Lovely to meet another Gardner  :)
