Thanks Spelk for that.  I have now discovered the British Newspaper Archive, you get some free pages but after that it is just a sort of index with a couple of usually misspelt lines.  I suspect my library may subscribe, so will investigate further.  A good resource.

I think that wraps it up for Horden.  Now waiting till they put some Durham and Chester newspapers on.

- Many thanks, Richard.

Thank you Spelk for the reply and reports from the newspapers.  Very sad about the boy.
Another Richardson brother, Robert Richardson may be the same Robert who married in the Sunderland RD 1935, Barbara Scott; but the 1939 "ID card index" has them in Horden.

Their cousins, the Lightfoots: Thomas and Ethel Daisy Lightfoot lived in Horden from 1930 to their deaths in 1957 (her) and 1959 (him).  Their children, though born and baptised in Durham and Northumberland, married in the Easington RD which meant probably Horden.  So the local newspapers may have had Lightfoot marriages: James Edward 1933 to Ethel Fletcher; Florence May 1935 to Cecil James; Rose 1936 to Charles Philip Boniface; Eleanor 1943 to Richard Cook (RD is now Durham East); Doreen 1949 to Dennis Walker; Norah 1951/52 to Frederick John Turns.

If you can easily scan the dates for marriages reported in the papers, that would be great - thank you.  And for the record, if someone from these families chance upon this thread and wonder who I am, I am a Cory descendant.  Some of the Cory family migrated from Norfolk to the Durham coalfields.  Eg John, Robert and Albert Richardson's mother was born Blanche Cory.  Ethel Daisy Lightfoot's mother was born Elizabeth Cory and became Mrs Henry Edward Spinks.

Thanks very much - RH

Thanks Rosie99 and BumbleB, I had no idea that a denomination and hence church could be identified by the page reference number.
I believe FindMyPast now has Catholic parish records, I will try there.  I don't suppose you can drill down further into which denomination?

Hello,
Re your observation
The marriage entry for Henry and Jane (page 1047) does not, to my mind, suggest a C of E marriage.
I do not have page 1047 - what does this refer to?  All the info I have on the marriage of Henry Barker Spinks and Jane Elizabeth Challinor is that it took place in the Chester-le-Street RD on 7 August 1909 and I have not been able to verify it independently.  But happy to stand corrected.  Please let me know if you have the marriage details.
Thanks, RH.

Hello,
Located the Spinks family on the electoral roll for Ellison St in 1918 to early 1920s and wonder if the Spinks children were baptised in nearest C of E church, Christ Church.  The children of Henry (Harry) Barker SPINKS and wife Jane Elizabeth born at that time were Hilda Spinks, born 21 May 1918; Edward Spinks, born 02 April 1920; Thomas Spinks, born June qtr 1922; Mary Elizabeth, born March qtr 1924 but dying almost immediately.
The family may have been in Ellison St earlier than 1918, so baptisms for Isaac Spinks 12/02/1916; Rachel Spinks, born 02/12/1914 and Henry Tennant Spinks, born June qtr 1913 may also be a Christ Church.  I think St Paul's would be too far away East from Ellison St.
If anyone has the time to check at Durham Record Office and send me the baptism details I'd be very grateful.
Thanks very much - Richard.

Hello,
I have located some Richardsons to Horden (also called Horden Colliery in some records) in the Easington RD.  If someone could please look up some marriages, I guess St Mary's church, I'd be grateful.  I have only the registration quarter.  John Richardson in the Sept qtr 1931 to Ivy Gladys Appleby.  Also Albert Richardson in the Sept. qtr 1935 to Margaret Kyle.
If time allows, children of the Richardson / Appleby marriage may also be baptised at St Mary's, Horden: Alice Richardson, born June qtr 1931; John, born June qtr 1934 and Henry on 28/Sept/1939.  Henry and his mother Ivy Richardson were civilian casualties of WW2 dying 7 Nov. 1941 at 37 South Crescent, Horden.
Thank you very much - RH.

Thanks Polar Bear for sending me the army docs for Daniel Kelly.
I was able to fill some gaps in his army career.  No clue as to his 1913 marriage to Ellen in the Wandsworth RD.  I had hoped that as with British WW1 docs the date of marriage and children born (all this for military pension purposes) would be revealed.  You are quite right that the purchase of the marriage cert would solve the issue of her parentage.  I am holding out that FindMyPast will put online the marriage details as they have been digitizing RC baptisms, marriages and burials in Britain in the last year or so (this is how I have found his baptism) but no marriage found as yet, maybe they are doing things gradually.
Thanks again, RH.

Hello,
A great thank you to Sandra and RunKitty for their help in tracking Canadian Kelly relatives.  I found Daniel Thomas' brother John finally as John Patrick Kelly, several WW1 pages and a newspaper article of John Patrick, wife Sibyl and their descendants in the Toronto Star.  Need to track youngest brother Francis or Frank next.

One question mark remains: Daniel Thomas' wife Ellen aged 28 in 1921 was according to a correspondent on Ancestry a cousin of her husband's and they needed a dispensation from the Bishop to marry (in 1913 in the Wandsworth RD, South London; she married as Ellen Kelly on freebmd).  He knows nothing else about her.  Apart from 2 pages of Daniel Thomas (aka David; b.12/Oct/1892) Kelly's WW1 CEF attestation papers I have nothing on him which could shed light on his wife, place of marriage, children etc that I have been able to locate on Ancestry or FindMyPast.  Perhaps you might have better luck.  Certainly there is very little when compared to the vast amount on his brother John Patrick's WW1 career.  Why could that be?

I have a possible death for Ellen Kelly in 1971 aged c. 78, and burial at St Mary's Cemetery, Collingwood, Simcoe County, Ontario in that year (familysearch says no photo but a biographical note which I cannot open).  I have requested a photo form FindAGrave, but if you could hunt down any info on Ellen, perhaps an obituary which may give away her parentage that would be great.  I have a number of Ellen Kelly's that are possibles including one born 2 March 1893 and another who was my great aunt though born 5 years later (15/Jan/1898).
Thanks in advance for your help - RH

Thank you Sandra and RunKitty for all this info.  I had found a couple of things myself that you posted up.  Quite how Edgar's parents got into such a muddle with his middle names I don't know, form Edgar Thomas in the 1921 census to Edgar Patrick Anthony in the death return!  The memorial inscription shows other children (Jojo, Kathleen, Jackie - boy or girl?) likely to be children of Charles Richardson and wife Margaret, née Kelly but they don't come up in my familysearch, at least.  Jojo has to be John I would think.

Then there are the Kelly children of Daniel Thomas and Ellen mentioned in the obit of their brother Desmond Thomas in 2004, Paddy, Thomas and John.  I have a John Peter died 1925 of 289 Jarvis (maybe James St) Orillia, informant his uncle Daniel MacDonald; but one of you, Sandra or RunKitty supplied vital dates for the baby boys as b and d. 1933 for Paddy; b and d.1931 for Thomas and b.1936 - d.1937 for John - where do these dates come from?  Daniel and Ellen may have been in Barrie by then?

Thanks for all your help - RH
