Armed Forces / Graves in Arnhem photo offer
« on: Wednesday 23 July 08 15:23 BST (UK)  »
I see someone has beaten me to it below in offering photos in the Netherlands, but I am visiting Arnhem in the next  two weeks, so if anyone wants a grave there photograhed I will do my best to oblige.  Need to know before end of July 26th 2008.

Armed Forces Resources / Info: Tank Corps War Diaries available
« on: Wednesday 27 June 07 23:05 BST (UK)  »
At the risk of teaching grandmothers to suck eggs, I discovered recently that the Tank Museum at Bovington has transcribed all the tank corps war diaries and battalion histories, plus personal accounts and tank "packs".  You can get a list of the available documents by automatic reply e-mail from the website, and the documents can be searched for names by e-mail request. Copies are reasonably priced - I got both the 10th battalion War Diary and History for WW1 for £10. Saves going there or to Kew yourself.

World War One / Anti-aircraft battery in Newcastle-u-Tyne WW1
« on: Monday 15 January 07 11:27 GMT (UK)  »
I've just discovered that my great-uncle served in the Royal Garrison Artillery from 1916-demob in 1919 with the 19th anti-aircraft battery.  Can anyone point me to information about the battery?  Can find nothing on Google. Was Newcastle ever attacked in WW1?

Armed Forces / What is "disgraceful conduct" in 1839?
« on: Tuesday 03 October 06 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I had a look at Army records at TNA recently for my 3xg'uncle James Cass who served from 1839 - 1849. After only 234 days service he was court martialled and given four months imprisonment. He was court martialled twice after that, though not till 8 years later, for short absences, but these only got him 40 days and 10 days imprisonment.  Under "character" it appears to say he was tried for "disgraceful conduct".  What might he have done?

If it is possible for you to go to the Huts cemetery, which seems to be near Ypres, I would love a photo of the grave of 2nd Lt Frederick Newton of the Cheshire regiment.  He was my great great uncle.  Thanks very much!

Thanks for that, Mack.  I've looked at Rootschat for a Great War forum but can't see it here. Can you give me the address, please?
