Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Suggestions about possible relationship
« on: Friday 10 February 23 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
No they're too old to be a half first cousin. They're younger than any of my grandparents, but not by a great deal.

I realise I'm being very mysterious here, so maybe it would help to give a bit more context. I didn't want to give too much detail because I'm worried I might be leaping to conclusions. Basically, I suspect this might be my grandfather's half sister.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Suggestions about possible relationship
« on: Friday 10 February 23 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :) I would love some input about the possible relationship between me and a person with whom I share the following:

'Shared DNA: 457 cM across 14 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 457 cM
Longest segment: 114 cM'

This person has an extensive tree, but no matches in mine. They're not a half cousin (they're older than any of my aunts or uncles) and not a great, great grandparent, in fact, they're younger than my grandparents. Also not a half or full great niece/nephew, my niblings are far too young to have children of their own.

I suspect I know the relationship but would appreciate some fresh ideas in case I'm reading too much into this.

Ah, so it is possible that the baptism was performed in the chapel within the hall. Thank you! That's really helpful.

Warwickshire / Roman Catholic Chaplaincy, Wootton Wawen
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've found a baptism for my g,g,g,g grandmother in 1804 at the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy in Wootton Wawen. Does anyone know were or what this was?

I've found the current chapel which dates from 1904, and an earlier chapel built behind Wootton Hall in 1813, but in 1804, as far as I can tell the Catholic chapel was in the dining room of the hall, so is it likely it would have been open for all baptisms? I'm guessing not, and the chaplaincy was somewhere else.

Any help would be much appreciated!

In many quarters Wikipedia is not looked on as reliable either. It does not do Wikipedia any good to make such comments.
Cheers
Guy

That used to be true, but nowadays there is a lot more effort made to ensure entries are both accurate and properly sourced. For example, I happen to know that many of the history entries are edited by academics. That isn't to say that Wikipedia should be seen as the final word on a subject, but it certainly a good starting point for further research.

The Lighter Side / Re: How long will it take me to transcribe this grave?!!!!
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
It's interesting how this overgrowth depends on the gravestone material.  I made a fruitless search in the churchyard at Penmon in east Anglesey several years ago.  Most of the stones were in fine purple Snowdonia slate, and looked as if they had only been there a short time, not over 100 years.  Maybe the smooth surface makes it harder for things to take hold, but I suspect there may be a chemical reason.

I did a university work placement transcribing in a cemetery and noticed the same. Some very old stones looked new, while others which were only decades old looked as though they had been there for centuries. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with the way some materials react to air pollution - happy to be told I'm wrong though.

Occupation Interests / Help deciphering mill job please.
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if some kind soul can decipher this job on a census. I'm pretty sure it was in a mill because of the later job he had, and the jobs of other family members and people in the area. I've been staring at it for months and getting nowhere - although I think it is 'card -something', it doesn't fit with any mill jobs which include the word card that I've been able to find.

Thank you for reading!

Warwickshire / Re: Family with Jewish connections in 16th century Wolston?
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 18:48 BST (UK)  »
That is interesting! I've never been able to place my family in Sicily, but there's evidence to suggest that is where they originated. It's seems likely the names are variations of each other - and would be variations of a much older name, Todros. The Spanish link is also interesting because variations of those surnames appear in databases of Jewish names in medieval Spain; it would also fit with what I know about the history of Judaism in the region. I haven't been able to make any connection with my people though.

Have you done any research into your mother's family?

For Kateblogs — I read w/ interest your family was originally Todero from Italy. My mother’s maiden name is Todaro and her family is from Licata, Sicily. There are Todaros throughout Sicily and they are rumored to be of Spanish descent.

Do you think the Toderos and Todaros are one and the same? If so, do you have any additional information?
