Midlothian / Roslin/Rosslyn Castle
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 21:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Looking for some help in tracing staff who worked at Roslin Castle. My great grandmother x2, Sarah Allan/Swan, born, c1842 or my great grandmother Grace Donaldson/Allan, born, 1867. One or both worked as sewing maids or domestic servants in the Castle. I would be very grateful for any help. Both had a spell in living in Roslin.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in answering, been working away from home lately.
My great grandmother x3 was Margaret Hutton, born around 1813 not sure where. She was married to Hugh Erskine from Liberton in Edinburgh. Her father was Alexander Hutton and he was a shoemaker to trade, no more info on her though.
Don't know if there's a connection to your Hutton line.

Midlothian / Scotlands People Lookup
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I was wondering if any kind member could do a quick look on Scolandspeople for me, at present i'm having a lot of trouble trying to get into this site, don't know if it's them or my computer thats the problem.
I'm looking for possible birth or death dates for Hugh Erskine. The info i have on him is that he was married on 30/11/1782, to Jean Chalmers at Liberton, Midlothian, they had 9 children born between 1782 and 1801, all Liberton.
Any help would be very welcome.

Iain :)

Hi, Is there anyone doing research for the surname Erskine,  in the Liberton/Gilmerton areas of Edinburgh or Midlothian. I'm stuck on Hugh Erskine b. c1813, Cockpen, married to Margaret Hutton, they were married in Liberton. Hughs father could've been Thomas Erskine,b, c1796 Cockpen.

Hi,
I'm looking for help in finding my gr. gr. grandfather Alexander Donaldson, born 1841 in Lasswade. In 1881, i think he might still have been a prisioner in Edinburgh.

Midlothian / Alexander Donaldson
« on: Friday 30 May 08 21:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks, Last year i posted a topic on Donaldson/Brown, which i had a lot of success with and, have now returned to the Donaldsons. The problem is i'm not 100% sure of the Alexander i'm tracing. What i have is,
my gr. grandmother Grace Allan was born 18/11/1867 but, her birth cert only gives her mothers name, Sarah Allan, Grace is down as being illigitimate.
Grace was married twice, 1st to Thomas Cherrie (26/8/1892) and, 2nd time to Robert Brown(31/12/1907). On both her certs her parentss are Alexander  & Sarah Donaldson, as was on her death cert, she died on 4/1/1951.

In the census returns of 1871 Grace (3) was living with her grandparents Andrew & Grace Allan, also her mother Sarah Allan, at 3 linden Cottage, Loanhead. And down as Donaldson.
The 1881 census for Lasswade has Grace (13) as Grace A D. But, was living with her mother who had just married a William Swan (2/6/1881).
But i cannot find any trace of a marrige of Alexander Donaldson & Sarah Allan.

The Alexander i think my gr. grandfather is, was born on 13/1/1841, Lasswade, he became a baker. His parents were John Donaldson and, Isabella Williamson, who married on29/1/1841.
John was born on 1/6/1818 in Lauder, Berwickshire and, died on 28/9/1857 in Penicuik, Midlothian.
His parents were Alexander Donaldson and, Alison Graham, no more info yet on them.
Does any member think that this is a connection.
Cheers Iain
