Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Essex BLAND's... help!
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for the new information, Turquois,

as promised, your direct lineage of the matriarch of this family.
Elizabeth Cross, the daughter of Peter Cross and Elizabeth Burnham, Peter Cross chr. 13 Nov 1739 in Woodbridge the son of Peter Cross chr. 25 May 1710 Walton, Suffolk, the son of Edmond Crosse b. 3 Sep 1678 Woodbridge, the son of Peter Cross(e) b. 18 Aug 1678 of Woodbridge, son of Edmond Cross(e) b. circa 1600-1620 of Woodbridge, Suffolk, England

Peter "Sr." m. Mary Wilkenson
Edmond m. Mary Freeman
Peter (the father of Edmond) m. 1st Joanne/Johannah maiden name unknown
Edmond (the father of Peter who m. Joanne/Johannah) m. Sarah, maiden name said to be Hinde, but haven't found proof of that.
Edmond who m. Sarah-their parents are not yet known to me.

Peter and some of his siblings were baptised in the Church of England but the family was marked as dissenters. in 1655, Edmond removed his family from the Church of England and joined the Quaker faith.

Edmond Cross and Mary Freeman had 6 children. their 2nd child, Edmund, is my ancestor. he removed to Colchester and m. Hannah Hawkins at Colchester meeting. his brother, Peter, who was the 5th child, is your ancestor. Peter remained in Woodbridge, marrying Mary Wilkenson there, and their apparently sole surviving child, Peter, Jr., later removed to Colchester where he rejoined the faith.

all the known collateral lines can be found here (it's too big to post here, yet is incomplete);
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=necko&id=I3002

my ancestry from my grandmother back-Ruth E. Cross>James F. Cross>William H. Cross>Joseph Cross, Jr.>Joseph Cross, Sr>Edmund Cross the younger>Edmond Cross>Peter Cross(e)>Edmond Cross(e) the earliest know ancestor.

there is a plethora of Edmond's and Peters in the tree, particularly prior to 1837, that can muddle and befuddle the mind unless one is looking at the paperwork and has a good fundamental knowledge of the family. trying to sort them out in my head can bring on a mental shutdown!

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: TILL....COLCHESTER
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
I no longer recall the mystery specifically, though working with the family may bring it back to mind. this is the family as I have it;

Catherine TILL
b. unknown
d. unknown
Sex: F
Marriage 1 Hezekiah Richards CROSS b: 1 Nov 1788 in St. Nicholas,Colchester,Essex,England
Married: 29 Dec 1811 in Saint Nicholas,Colchester,Essex,England
Children
 Alfred Till CROSS b: 27 Dec 1812 in Saint James,Colchester,Essex,England
 Mary Ann CROSS b: 13 Nov 1814 in Saint Botolph,Colchester,Essex,England
 Rebecca CROSS b: 16 Sep 1818 c: 11 Dec 1834 in Saint Nicholas,Colchester,Essex,England
 Edward CROSS b: 4 Dec 1829 c: 2 Nov 1834 in Saint Nicholas,Colchester,Essex,England
 Thomas CROSS c: 16 Nov 1834 in St. Mary Virgin,Colchester,Essex,England

Alfred m. Lavinia King, apparently without prodigy, the rest of the children I've never found marriages for.

Hezekiah had a Quaker birthright but Thomas is known to have been baptised in the CofE.
they could have had 2 Mary Ann's, but there's some question about that.

Newton is born at the right time to be Catherine's brother, but whether he is I've no idea.

Westmorland / Re: Mary Aitken of Kendal

hi, tmcfarland,
yes, I'm still here, and no, I haven't found Mary yet.
thanks for your offer. I'm still looking for two things, and I don't know if they can be found, but I'd appreciate you're trying. being able to look at the records on site is so much better than browsing partial records online.
Mary Aitken's baptism. I have never found it. I have a birth date of 10 Nov 1779 Kendal but cannot find her.
Where did Richard Atkinson and Ann Airey come from? Lincolnshire? Yorkshire? Scotland? somewhere else? if in Scotland, which shire?
thank you.

if you trace back far enough I was the thread owner, I started it. it has gone exceedingly off track, but I decided not to protest. we all have a need for research help. I started it with a request for information on my Moffitts. I still am requesting information.

I'v found my Moffitt/Murfitt ancestry, but not the Mason or Smith ancestry.
Martha Mason was born 25 Mar 1810 Armley, Yorks daughter of William Mason and Martha Smith. she was their youngest. we have information on her and her siblings, but not much on their parents and no copy of the baptism records.

William Mason bmd unknown father Christopher mother unknown
wife Martha Smith bmd unknown parents unknown
children;
 Christopher MASON c: 4 Sep 1798 in Armley,Yorkshire,England probably died in infancy
 Christopher Columbus MASON b: 21 Dec 1800 in Armley,Yorkshire,England c: 22 Feb 1801 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Sarah MASON c: 11 Dec 1803 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 William MASON c: 30 Apr 1809 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Martha MASON b: 25 Mar 1810 in Armley,Yorkshire,England c: 2 Jun 1811 in Armley,Yorkshire,England

Christopher (father of William) appears to have had these children, and this may be his wife;

possible marriage to;
Sarah DEWHURST
Marriage: 15 Jul 1761
Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England

this might be him
Christopher MASON
Sex: M

Event(s):
Christening: 28 May 1735
Fewston, Yorkshire, England

Parents:
Father: George MASON
Mother: Mary

 George MASON c: 4 Dec 1761 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 John MASON b: 21 Jul 1763 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Mary MASON c: Jan 1764 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Susanna MASON c: 5 Jan 1766 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Christopher MASON c: 22 Nov 1767 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 John MASON c: 4 Mar 1770 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 Sarah MASON c: 5 Nov 1772 in Armley,Yorkshire,England
 William MASON c: 2 Jun 1774 in Armley,Yorkshire,England

I found these two possibles for Martha Smith on the IGI, but I can't tell whether either is her.

Martha Smith chr. 7 Jul 1786 Morely Yorks, England, New Chapel Independant, b. 4 Jun 1786 father Thomas, mother Betty

or more likely;

MARTHA SMITH

Event(s):
Birth: 08 OCT 1774

Death:
Burial:

I'd like to verify these and extend the ancestry.

I recognise the town names but it's been some time since I focused on that-so it may be female branches of the family with non-Cross names. all of the towns are familiar except Edmonton...but a branch did settle in Edmonton, Canada, lol...
yes, memory just clicked in. Aubrey Cross, son of Aubrey Cross and Mary Church, settled in the Shoreditch area, some of his family went to Australia and I am in contact with one of the branches of his line...some of my branch were also in that area before they left for America...they somehow eluded the census taker in 1841, darn it!
I'll have to get into my old computer and really check my information-I can access it from here but can't use the search tool. I'll get back to you. I don't have your names in my file, but I'm missing a number of branches, perhaps yours is one of them.

these are the Cross's I found, and although none of them are specifically from the towns of interest, they may connect. I've listed those with connections to the specific towns below, they are descendants of the Cross's but without the Cross surname...

Aubrey Cross b. 1796 of Colchester, chr. Sudbury, d. St. Botolph's Aldgate, London
Elizabeth Cross b. 1718 St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey d. St. Clements East
Joseph Cross b. 1732 St. Martin Ongar, Middlesex, d. St. Martin Ongar, London
Joseph Cross b. 1730 St. Martin Ongar, Middlesex d. St. Martin Ongar, Middlesex (infant death)
Joseph Aubrey Cross b. 1807 Colchester, resided Tower Hamlets (to America)  d. Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Margaret Cross b. 1736 St. Martin Ongar, London, d. Norfolk, England
Sarah Crosse b. 1692 Woodbridge, Suffolk, d. Wapping, Middlesex
Edmond Crosse b. 1649 Woodbridge (no surviving offspring) d. Woodbridge, m. 2nd wife in Peel, Middlesex

for those with London ties which did not come up also for a search in Middlesex;

Aubrey Cross b. 1771 b. & d. in Colchester, m. in St. Botolph's w/o Aldersgate, London
Benjamin Cross b. 1708 Woodbridge, drowned under the London bridge as a young man of 16 years of age. deemed an accident.
Edmund Cross b. 1776 Colchester, d. Moorfields, London
John b. 1734 St. Martin Ongar, London, d. Southwark, Surrey
John b. 1733 St. Martin Ongar, London, infant death

I do have descendants of some of these individuals. I wish Edmond Crosse's children had survived.

Spitalfields;
Caroline Mayo
Arthur Joseph Tiffin
Spencer Smith Tiffin

Shoreditch;
no individuals-could have sworn I did, but that's memory for you....

Bethnl Green
same as Shoreditch-oh, they could have been there in the census, but not bmd'd at the places...that will take a different search.

Hackney...not as certain abt this one, though Tower Hamlet's close...hah! ok, do not trust my memory. however, none of the 14 individuals was bmd'd before 1810. the list includes one "married in", 9 very distant Harris cousins, a Lowry, an Oliver, a Richards and a Wixley.

Tottenham;
Richard Camps b. 1758
Margaret Cross b. 1736
John Harris b. 1749
Ann Warner b. 1748

Edmonton;
4, all after 1810. a Harris, two Tiffins, and a Tylor (no a in that last name)

understandably, none of these may fit, so if you send me your individual Cross's, I may connect with them somewhere along the line. they could belong to an earlier branch that I know little or nothing about, and that I have no information of they or their offspring being in Middlesex or London.

please at least let me know your earliest Cross and I'll see what I can find. do you know their faith? most of the early Cross's in my tree were Quaker, but they were just about every faith by the mid 1800's.

some time back a more closely related descendant of this line found Elizabeth's marriage for both of us. Elizabeth m. John Cooper, and Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Bland and Elizabeth Cross.
even earlier than Elizabeth's marriage, I also found out who Peter's parents were. They were Peter Cross and Mary Wilkenson of Suffolk. Peter, Sr. was the son of Edmond Cross and Mary Freeman. Edmond and Mary are my direct line ancestors, Peter is a collateral line.
the branches are now attached to our main tree. there are branches to fill out still, but the big mysteries are solved.

hi, Christopher,
we have the city, thanks to that researcher in Massachusetts. James was born in Belfast. but a townland is a smaller section than a city, isn't it? the rest is still unknown. I haven't found a satisfactory site for Irish records and cannot afford the Irish archives fees for records, so I'll continue to muddle along and hope for records to eventually be available some day.
