Lanarkshire / Govan burial place & name
« on: Friday 27 April 07 12:25 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors Ann McFarlane (nee Duncan) died on the 27th July 1861 in Govan. Does anyone know how I can find out which cemetary she is buried in, assuming she is buried in Govan?

I gained the information from her death certificate and I would also like help in finding the address of where she died, it looks like it is written Hyndford Place but I could not find this in any maps. An image of the address from the death certificate is attached.

Thanks for any help,
Jason McFarlane

Hi Twinkleberry,

Thanks for all the information, that is definitely very useful. Do you know how it is possible to get a copy of the marriage certificate to find out who the parents are?

For other ancestors in my family from Kent I have obtained a copy from the GRO but on their website it is only possible to search for records after 1837.

Cheers, Jason

The record you found certainly seems the best match. Her age in the 1841 census matches that she was born in 1827, calculated from her age on the shipping list (26 in 1853) and age at death (72 in 1899, see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198230.0.html).

I finally have the marriage certificate of John Buddle and Mary Dixon :)

They were married as mentioned before 14 Oct 1848 at the Parish church in the parish of Deal in Kent.

John Buddle's profession was blacksmith and his residence at the time of marriage was Northbourne. His father was Thomas Buddle who was also a blacksmith.

Mary Dixon's residence at the time of marriage was Beach Street and her fathers name was William Dixon who was a labourer.

Thanks to everyone for helping me get this far, the marriage certificate finally confirms that his father was Thomas. Now I can also work on tracking down Mary Dixon seeing I have her fathers name.

Cheers Jason

Australia / Yatala prison records lookup please
« on: Wednesday 29 November 06 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, if it is possible I would like a lookup of Yatala prison records.

The lookup I am after is for my great-great grandfather Thomas FIELD. He was born in South Africa 30 Jun 1842 and emigrated to Australia with his mother on "Commodore" in 1853. He died 12 Mar 1921.

He was married twice the first time to Winifred LAWSON in Gawler, South Australia, 9 Oct 1866. The second time to (Frances) Adelaide (Ann) TAPLIN in Adelaide, South Australia 23 Dec 1876.

The story I have heard is that he was arrested for armed robbery and sentenced to death. The sentence was reduced to life and then reduced again such that he was only in jail for a few years.

The other part of the story is that while he was serving time his first wife remarried. If this is correct then he must have committed the crime/been in jail between 1866 and 1876.

I have found that it is possible to order these records in microfiche form, but maybe someone has access to an electronice form of the records if it exists ??? The link I found was http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/publications/orderinds.html and the title is Alphabetical index to Prisoners' registers, Yatala Labour Prison. 1866 - 1931.

Can anyone please help confirm/reject this wonderfull little story :)

Thanks in advance,
Jason McFarlane

Thanks for all the information Twinkleberry. I did have some of it already but I did not have the information about William being a tailor. I thought that the ship building part of the family came from him, but it looks like it was from the McFarlane side (from this and other information I have gathered).

Thanks Cazay for the other info, I did have the link to requesting info from the library so I thingk that I will have to make use of that service and get a copy.

Cheers, Jason.

South Africa / Re: FIELD/HARRIS lookup please
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have found Tho's FIELD on the muster roll of the HMS Weymouth (http://www.genealogyworld.net/settlers/weymouth.html) arriving in Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth) 20 May 1820.

UPDATE - On the same website I have also found the following:
From the settler lists (http://www.genealogyworld.net/robin/1820.html) there were two Thomas FIELDs.

1. Arrived as on the Weymouth as part of Cock's party and was a 25yr old Carpenter.
http://www.genealogyworld.net/nash/cock.html

2. Arrived on the Salisbury as part of Charles CAMPBELLs party, no other information.
http://www.genealogyworld.net/nash/campbell.html

I do not know how reliable the birth year that I have for Thomas is so I cannot say for certain whether or not he is the first one.

I guess finding the marriage certificate would help me greatly.

Cheers,
Jason

Kent / PADDICK/CRADDICK Marriage/Birth lookup - Maidstone
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 08:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi , I am trying to find family information and get a marriage lookup for Henry Dunwill PADDICK and Maria CRADDICK.

Most of the information I have is from family, but I also have some from the IGI which I would like to try and confirm. Where I have conflicting information I have put the source in brackets or if the information is only from the IGI then it is in brackets as well.

Henry Dunwill PADDICK (in the IGI he is also recorded as Henry Dunmill PADDICK but I am pretty sure this is a typo)
b. 1811, (Maidstone, Kent - from IGI)
m. 13 Nov 1833, (All Saints - from IGI), Maidstone, Kent
d. 16 May 1872, Clarendon, South Australia

Maria CRADDICK (maybe CRADDOCK - ship lists, or CRADDUCK - IGI)
b. 1817 (Alverstoke, Hampshire - from family, or Maidstone, Kent - from IGI)
d. 10 May 1886, Clarendon, South Australia

Both migrated to South Australia on the "Winchester" in 1838. On the shipping lists they are listed as Henry Dunwill PADDICK and Maria PADDICK (nee CRADDOCK).

It would be great if I could confirm their birth information and possibly find out about their parents.

Thanks in advance,
Jason McFarlane

There is a farm in St.Peters Broadstairs called BUDDLES FARM.Just wondering if it is connected to the family you are researching.

It is possible, I have found the farm on some old & new maps but not much other information about who it may have been named after. Once I get the marriage certificate of John and Mary and confirm for certain who the parents are then I will look into it some more.

Cheers Jason.
