Monaghan borders Co. Cavan and I have some McDowell's there. I do know of one Susanna McDowell whom worked as a servant and relation to the Trelford's in or near Co. Cavan.
I was hoping that you mentioned Cootehill as there were many McDowell's there.
I will investigate further into the McDowell's near Tedavent Monaghan. John McDowell had about 60 acres of land at Ballybay andRev. Martin McDowell was the Minister at Crieve near by.
The biggest problem I have is that My McDowell naming pattern changed when my McDowell's left the Presbyterian Church or the Church of Ireland and this caused a split from the family.
The post before yours shows a Urey family connection which has to be looked at too.
best regards, Peter

My great grandfather John Alford was in Motcombe and married a Harding. Sarah Kate was a sister to Albert Alford he married Mary Banks in Canada and fought in ww1. I have a site called McDowell families but there are lots of Alford's from Motcome and I am interested in the fellow Essau Alford that married one Jane? Gray from Dorset. Any ideas? I have a strong notion that this was Dr. Uriah McDowell of Clogher Town. . I will have to check.
His brother was Samuel McDowell,'Yellow Sam' in  Carleton's book, an estate agent for Cadogan Keating, Dean of Clogher. I think another daughter married a Millar and some descendants went to the USA. It was not unusual to have
McDowell's being Catholic as some came to Ireland before the Reformation 1500's. All the McDowell's and Scots were Catholic as were the Stewarts of Scotland. I will check my files. best regards, Peter

Rev. Cecil Brett  says,
John Hamilton, might be a son of David Hamilton, a Stewart tenant in Cooligery in 1856 was probably a descendant of the John Hamilton of Millex whose name is enshrined in Kerog porch.
This is close to Ballygawley Town and I also came across one Rev. David Hamilton of Belfast.
I hope that this might help.

I have been told that (some) of the land in the Weald was not the best for farming and people moved for this reason.
I wonder about this myself. I do think that the change in industry attracted people to learn trades with secured them a working future.

Yes John was with his sister and his sister had a son, I think was called
Philip Josiah (Alford ?) b. 1836. I will look that one up for sure.
