Scotland / Missing Rellies - Hudson Bay Company
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
Can I just say for those that already know sorry for repeating something familiar.
However, found out that the Hudson Bay Company have archived (in pdf  format) the details of personnel that worked for them in the past. So if you can't find a rellie, especially from Orkney try this link

There is also a bit about the HBC and Stromness connection on this link

Hoy was a registration district after 1855...........are you looking for anyone in particular?

Hi torilar,
By the looks of it same as you, Clingan/Hacklands etc. Midlothian Clingans - in fact all Scottish Clingan's connected - back to KPD. Includes John Clingan the baker who cleared off to Orkney with family later returning to Leith area after his passing, with one of daughters marrying into the Hacklands.

Statutory registration of BDMs only started in Scotland in 1855, so prior to that date there would only be church baptism records, which should have recorded been at the relevant church on Hoy. Can't tell you whether there was a Registrar on Hoy post 1855. No doubt someone will know.

Thanks Elwyn

General query re BDM registration on Hoy. Would the BDMs in 1700/1800's been registered on Hoy or the nearest place on Orkney ie Stromness?
Thanks in advance Ian Clingan

Hi Falkirk,
Yes they are an interesting lot.
Will have to dig out my records but all your names seem rather familiar.
This particular branch ended up in Stromness due to a slight cash flow problem! He was a baker by trade.
On his death the family moved back to the Leith area, with one working in a coal mine in the Golspie/ Brora area before he also moved back to the area of Leith and if I recall becoming a foreman in a steel mill/foundry. Some of the others end up in States and then onto South Africa, then Australia and New Zealand. Relations still about in Edinburgh/ New Zealand.

If you drop me a line via messages I will e-mail you details.
Regards
Ian
