New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: William McAughtrie b Barr, Ayrshire, 1847

Hi, my husband & I have recently bought Bellamore Farm in Pinwherry, South Ayrshire.  I've just started to look and see what information I can find about its history and this post came up.  If you've come across anything about Bellamore in your research into William McAughtrie I'd be really interested.  There has been a house at Bellamore for hundreds of years, the earliest we have found so far is in the Bleau Atlas of 1654 (as Ballmoir).  The current house was built 1872 but we don't know much about what was there before except it was a traditional U shaped steading.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: St Barnabas House or Home, Brentwood

I know very little apart from what I have posted here.  My gt-grandmother was living there in 1907 so if it is the same place, she would have been there the same time as your father-in-law.

In 1901 the head of household was a Sister of Mercy called Philippa Nicolas and most of the others were elderly 'visitors' so it was not an orphanage at that time.  We suspect Philippa Nicolas was still there in 1907 because she had strong ties to a Constance Gray, whose sister, Kythe Gray was a witness at my gt-grandmother's wedding and this would explain how my gt-grandmother came to be living there.  However there is nothing to say that the function of the building did not change.

Was it a Catholic orphanage do you know?

In 1891 there was a convent round the corner in Queens Rd (which may be the 'big building' referred to in Clincher's post rather than St Barnabas) but it doesn't seem to be there in 1901 although I haven't looked hard.  That could be the sort of building that was turned into an orphanage.  Just a thought....

Sorry can't be more help but am working on this area so something may turn up!

That fits.  On the census, next to St Barnabas House comes St Thomas's Villas (4 residences with only 1 or 2 people so could have been part of same building).  Then next address is in Queens Rd.

Have been checking the 1901 census again - St Barnabas House (or Home) is in St Thomas's Road.  I looked on a map and it looks like it is off the High St.

Thank you!  I will follow up the probate records.  This is the right person who was a witness at my gt-grandparents wedding and who appeared to be close to them.

I have Ivy Kythe Fordham's birth record (she also died in 1881) - her parents are John William Fordham and Anna Rebecca Atkins.  I have their marriage cert - clutching at straws but still looking for a link between these Fordhams and my gt-grandmother Catherine Emily Marion Fordham, other than the coincidence of the name Kythe cropping up in a Fordham family.

Does anyone have any information about a St Barnabas House or Home in Brentwood, Essex?  My gt-grandmother was living there at the time of her marriage in 1907.  It is possible she was working there.   In the 1901 census the residents were elderly or sisters of mercy.  Any information greatly appreciated.

She was a widow at the time of her death and we believe she was living with her eldest son, Leslie but we do not know where - the most likely places are Sussex where most of the family lived or Scotland where he did live at some point but that is just speculation.  We are currently trying to trace Leslie's children with whom we have lost touch.
