Would appreciate a look up in the Godstone Union Records for June 1903. Admission of 5 children of Rushen family into the Union Infirmary, any detail welcome.

I do not have a date of Thomas' marriage to Hannah, nor do I have her surname prior to marriage. This of course has prevented me from finding a possible child from previous marriage etc Will re-look at local parishes with that in mind but I do believe she was a Ramsbury girl.

 Thanks for the suggestions.

An interesting visitor who looks like he is a Rushen from Ramsbury.

Thomas (1779) married Anne Ferris in 1808 and they had two children. Anne died in 1815 and he then married Hannah. Their children were Eliza (1822), Thomas (1823), Robert (1826), Elizabeth (1829)

Hi Nanny Jan & Ben
Thanks for your response.

Have an excel spreadsheet of likely marriages from freebdm, slowly ticking them off.

Have searched 1891 census at Ancestry with a bit of lateral thinking ie no surnames but looking for a married Eliza from Henstead, Hethersett etc. Nothing so far but am aware that the census is not complete.
Thanks for the tip about searching for the possible spouse in the census, have to get Claire busy on that tonight! That should eliminate a few more on the spreadsheet.

I do not think she emigrated or died as family rumour has it that when daughter was much older she pointed her mother out in the street.

Eliza Roberts born Humble Yard, sub district of Henstead, Norfolk 3 July 1852, parents Jonas Roberts and Elizabeth Osborne.

In 1870 left Hethersett and went to 3, Richard St., Liverpool Rd., Islington.

2 April 1871 living at 38, Liverpool Rd., Islington.

5 July 1871 entered St Mary Islington Workhouse and gave birth to Caroline Roberts on 29 August 1871. She left the workhouse twenty one days later.

In 1881 Eliza aged 29 worked at 15, Edith Grove Chelsea as a cook to Wilton Barrett. Her sister Catherine Howell lived 25, Holloway Road, Islington.

Caroline now aged 9 living with maternal uncle John Roberts at Hethersett.

We know what happened to Caroline as she was our grandmother. What happened to Eliza Roberts?

I have a GOONS study for Rushen so have covered the various parishes and name variations in the Record Offices.
Out there somewhere is the clue I need.
Have a web page at:- http://mywebpage.netscape.com/rushenfamily/index.htm

Thanks Welsh Lady.
I have printouts of the items you mention, thanks.
You obviously noted the miss-spelling in the 1891 census for Godstone that they are down as Russen. This is a problem I have all the time.

1881 census

William Rushen,Head,26,Gen Lab,Wiltshire
Sophie Rushen,Wife,21,Croydon,Surrey
William Rushen,Son,2,Bletchingley,Surrey
Thomas Rushen,Son,7m,Bletchingley,Surrey
William Rushen,Boarder,Unm.60,Ag Lab,Wiltshire

Although William Rushen 60 is shown as boarder I wonder if he is the brother of Thomas, therefore uncle of William Henry?

I have the death certificate for Thomas but that does not appear to help. Death reported by Susan Crane who you will see three entries below Thomas in 1891 census. She is 53 and single so probably not related.

I have trawled through the 1861 census for Berkshire, Surrey and Wiltshire for son William or Henry with father Thomas – no result.

Have also been through all census records 1841 – 1901 to build up a picture of the Rushen families who have a Thomas and William in them – no result.

I think I need somebody to do a bit more lateral thinking to solve the problem. Three of us have been trying for in excess of seven years!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do have a theory based on given names in the family that William Henry was born as William Robert in 1853 to Thomas and Maria Woolford. Supporting that is the fact that I cannot find a death or marriage for a William Robert.

If we look at William H’s children, if he is William R did he take their names as follows:- Thomas after father, Maria after his mother, Ellen Sophia after his youngest sister, Louisa after a sister. He also had aunts Eliza and Ellen.

Help!
Peter
