Lanarkshire / Re: Marriage 1840 - but in which Church?
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 15:36 BST (UK)  »
It was rare for marriages at that time to take place in a church. Most weddings took place either in the bride's home or in the manse of the church the bride attended. Sometimes, outside the cities, it might be in the village hall or even a hotel.

I don't know if any of you with an interest in the Paisley Kerrs are still reading these posts. If so, I have been re-visiting this part of my tree and have discovered the death of Sophie Mascot. She died on 25 March 1906 in the Royal Alexandra Infirmary, Paisley of uterine cancer. Her usual residence is given as 1 Calside Place (where her sisters-in-law also lived) and her death is registered by her son
M. T. (Martial Thomas) Kerr. The certificate no. is 573/1 Paisley no. 358. There are also probate records.

No success so far in finding the cap. The hunt continues! Let us know if you hear from the school.

I've contacted a family member who may still have my Dad's cap. If so, I'll get her to take a photo and we can see if they match. Someone who lived in Cambuslang would be quite likely to go to one of the Glasgow selective schools.

It reminds me of my father's Allan Glen's cap from a similar time. Certainly the colours are the same. It could be worth trying to contact the current team (or the school) to see if they can help.

Alexander Bryson was the husband of Jean Currie, the 3rd of John & Elizabeth's children.

The reunion was in 1867. John & Elizabeth's eldest son presided and 4 younger sons were there. They would be John, William, Hamilton & Matthew. According to the newspaper report there were 104 people there from 9 families. Those 9 families would be those of Katherine, Robert, Jean, John, William, Hamilton, Elizabeth, Betsy & Matthew. The 10th child, James, died without issue in 1861. Interesting that they must have kept enough contact with each other to make such a reunion possible.
