Many thanks. I didn’t know that. So at least now we know we are probable looking at the male line.  That helps.

Many thanks for this information, it’s very much appreciated. We still have the puzzle as to where the ‘didicoy’ comes from.  It’s very intriguing and I know it’s sonetginv my 81 year old father in law would love to find out.  I will do as you suggested and join the F of D family history trust. Maybe they can throw some light on Traveller families in the area at that time. Thank you once again. 😊

Gloucestershire / Forest of Dean - didicoys
« on: Friday 16 November 18 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. We are currently compiling my father in Law’s family tree as a surprise for him. One of the queries we are trying to solve is that his Grandfather was known to be a Didicoy. I’d not heard the term before, but apparently it is someone with Gypsy blood.  His name was Clarence Albert Morgan.  He was born in Westbury on Severn 1883 to Thomas A Morgan and Martha Prime Head. His grandparents  surnames were Morgan, Hammett, Head and Jones. Clarence Albert later moved to Cwm in South Wales, where he married Maud Mary Merry and raised 8 children.  He died aged 47. Does anyone on here know of any gypsy families in W on S during or before Clarence Albert’s time (1883), with any of the names I have mentioned above?  Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Herefordshire / Re: Herefordshire Prisons
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 15:26 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the info re where to possibly look for the report of the court case.  Re the 1911 census - Henry was out of prison by then and living in Ebbw Vale , South Wales with his children so the census is no use really.  I think I will have to take a trip to Hereford Library and see what I can find out.

Thanks once again.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Certificate - Condition - query
« on: Monday 28 August 06 07:46 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your reply Phil.  That seems quite possible as the word Batchelor was crossed out and Widower put in it's place with the 2 above and the word Spinster was crossed out and the word Widow put in it's place with a 3 above.  So your theory makes sense.  I think I will telephone the local register office and ask them.  If I find out, I will let you know!  Thanks again.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Certificate - Condition - query
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 09:23 BST (UK)  »
I have recently had the marriage certificate of my GGGrandparents and under "Condition" it states that he is a widower and has a number 2 above the word widower and that she is a widow and has a number 3 above the word widow. Does anyone know what this means please?

We think it may mean that he has been widowed twice and she three times or that this is his second marriage and her third.  Does anyone know?

Regards

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Penbryn Cardiganshire - Davies - 1871
« on: Friday 31 December 04 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the offer Ruth, however,  I have recently been given information from the 1871 census and in fact, it hasn't helped us at all  :( its all quite perplexing!

The 1861 gave us Enoch Davies aged 68, his wife RACHEL aged 68 and granddaughter Esther aged 10

The 1871 gave us Enoch Davies aged 77 and his wife MARGARET aged 54 and no one else.

1981 gave us only Enoch Davies with his granddaughter Esther aged 32 [Enoch died later that year]

However - this particular Enoch, is either the father or grandfather of my GGGrandfather who [unfortunately] was also called Enoch  and is the one we are trying to find out information on - he was born around 1828/1833 and we know he was born at Ffynondudir but as yet have not found him on any of the census.  The first census we find him on is the 1901 living in Ebbw Vale. Monmouthshire - he died there in 1917.  Its quite a puzzler!  I think we now need to look for the 1851 census although I believe that this particular census is incomplete.

Thanks once again for the offer - any other suggestions or hints would be gratefully received!
