Thanks for the nice restoration, Peter.   Quite right to think about a Common Riding event, Skoosh, but the Galashiels one (Braw Lad's Day) isn't all that ancient and began in 1930.  The Hawick and Selkirk Common Ridings are very much older.

Many thanks, Ruskie and Pat.  Wouldn't the necessary long exposure be the reason for the lack of smiling?

Many thanks, Carol......You think 1902 is about right.....but I don't quite understand your 2nd response.    Malcolm

Hi
I would be grateful for a date estimate of this image.  It shows the workers of Robert Burns and Sons whose work mainly involved the manufacture of machines for the textile mills in Galashiels. The photo may have been taken prior to a town parade. The men are all very well dressed, the horse and cart are decorated and there are possibly model boats on display in the cart.
The image must pre-date October 1902 when the gentleman who is arrowed died.
I wonder if the August 1902 town parade to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII is a possibility.
Many thanks  Malcolm

Thank you , Carol, Prue, China and Jim

Looking at the writing on the back again I wonder if it reads "Coplan (whatever that means) of JN".......which could stand for Jess Notman, the great aunt born in 1882...and the photograph was found in an envelope marked "Jess's photographs".

However your suggested date clearly rule out the image being of her.   Her first niece born in 1911 is a possibility.

Many thanks.
I should have included that information.  The photograph is in postcard format (5.25x 3.5 inches).  The photo side is as shown in my original mail.  Here is the reverse , annotated "C6588. As copy.   Copland.  ???"

I'd be grateful for dating help with this Glasgow photo.   There are 2 candidates - my great aunts, Jess (born 1882) and Lil (born 1896).  I think the wee girl is about 7, so if its Jess ( as I think it is) the date should be around 1889. (If it was Lil the date would be about 1903).
Many thanks    Malcolm

Many thanks, China.   Very helpful.  That slightly later date isn't a good fit with the ages of my Robert Lindsay's family.  So I'm afraid they are not likely to be my ancestors.   I see from some web browsing that there was a prominent "Robert Lindsay" who played golf  with the legendary Old Tom Morris in St Andrews in the 1860s or so --perhaps its him.
