One Name Studies: H to M / Re: JONES - Bagillt/Holywell
« on: Tuesday 16 June 20 09:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Gosh, good to receive a message on this after many many years.  I'm still keen to find out more about my Samuel and Grace Jones … but it does sound as if my Grace and your Grace might not be the same person.

This is my Grace:
1851 Census - Walwen, Holywell, Flintshire, Wales - HO107/2500/315/7
Samuel   JONES   H   49   M   Engineer             Holywell, Flint
Grace     JONES   W   45   M   Engineer’s Wife   Llanrwst, Denbigh
Richard   JONES   S   22   U   Engineer             Holywell, Flint
Ellen       JONES   D   18   U   ? at Home          Holywell, Flint
Llewelyn JONES   S    16   -   Son                    Holywell, Flint
Sarah     JONES   D    11   -   Scholar               Holywell, Flint
Robert    JONES   S      6   -   Scholar               Holywell, Flint
Edward   JONES   S      3   -   -                        Holywell, Flint

I have discovered a bit more since posting my original message.  My Grace was born a Williams.  She was born in Llanddoget, Llanrwst in 1805 the eldest child of Richard Williams and his wife Eleanor of Ty Gwyn,  Landogget.  Although I have been able to find Grace's parents I remain well stuck with Samuel's parents.  I know they were from the Bagillt, Holywell area and were Robert and Mary Jones.  However there seem to be two Roberts and Mary Joneses and I just can't sort one from another.

Regards, Ninian

Flintshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 -TATTUMs from BAGILLT, HOLYWELL

Has anyone managed to track the Tattum family any further back than John and Mary Tattum who had 4 children:  Margaret 1762; Thomas 1764; Elizabeth 1766 and John 1768? Or the birth/baptism or marriage of John and Mary?

Thanks for this.  A further complication seems to be that the original parish church was right on the edge of Llandanwg parish - not very conveniently placed for the parishioners of Llandanwg but very convenient for the parishioners of the neighbouring parish of Llanfair. Many people from Llanfair seem to have some of their children baptised in Llanfair and some in Llandanwg - it all yets very confusing.

US Lookup Requests / Re: New York death - BARDSLEY 1916
« on: Monday 28 July 14 22:10 BST (UK)  »
As I said he is only a distant relative - my grandfather's mother was a Bardsley and my grandfather knew John.  I only knew of John's existence as my grandfather kept a newspaper cutting about his death.  I'd assumed as John and family were living in New York when he died that he would have been buried there, so it is quite a surprise to hear that his body was taken home to Walkden.
I understand his wife was Mary Ann Howarth and they had 3 children: John, Mary (Mollie) and James.  The Bardsley family are quite interesting and I have quite a bit of info about them but I often wondered what happened to John's wife and children after he died so young.  Had he lived he would no doubt have become even more famous. As far as I know my branch of the Bardsley family lost contact with John's immediate family after his death so I'd be grateful for any info you have about John and especially his family after his death.

MESSAGE FOR CHERYL

I can't send you a Personal Message as you haven't posted 3 messages.  I really would like to see your (fairly) recent photos of the church.  So if you could reply to my message you'd then only have to post one more message and then I could send you a Personal Message!  Hope to hear from you.

Hi Margaret

Many thanks for the old photos.  On photo 18 I can actually see the grave.  It stands out against the darker background of the church.  It's amazing how different the area looks - without the new road, with the church and with the graveyard looking tidy, not overgrown like it is now.

Many thanks Ninian

Hi Cheryl

I found the graves I was looking for after quite a bit of searching.  One of the graves was very near the flat patch where I imagine the church must have been.  You don't happen to know roughly when it was demolished (and why - was it structurally unsafe?) I would love a pic or pics of St Cynon's when it was there.  I'm not quite sure how best to do it.  I suppose it might be easiest if I give you my email address here (I imagine that's ok? - I'll soon find out if Rootschat allows it when I post my reply).  Here's my address: (*)

That's good.  They told me to report thru the Transcription Change method too.  As you say, just not practical, it's not designed for reporting whole batches of mis-assigned images ...... and they more or less told me that the images were correct anyway.

I'm glad you've got them to look at the issue.  I'll try and look at some of the images we think are popping up under the wrong parish when I go to the NLW shortly and see which parishes the NLW record them as.  Then I'll report the issue again, armed I hope with evidence from the NLW ...... if they haven't sorted it by then.  It can't do any harm for more than one person to report their errors.  The more valid complaints they get the more careful they might be in future (perhaps!)

They were good on amending 1911 transcription errors that I sent in too ..... before I gave up cos there were so many but as you say this is more complicated.

I think I will have another go with reporting the oddities with Llandanwg etc and hope I get a different person and better response.  I'm away most of next week and then I'm hoping to get a day trip to NLW the following week so I might wait til then so I can quote the differences in FindMyPast records with those in NLW (dunno if that will help but it might).

I went on to the family search site this evening and the describe the FindMyPast site as a Partner Site and say "This collection was done in cooperation with FindMyPast".  As the Mormon Church did the filming perhaps FindMyPast did the transcriptions and the results were shared?  They have certainly shared the errors - I looked up my Hugh Griffith marriage (actually 30 Aug 1779 in Llanenddwyn) on the family search site and it was identical to FindMyPast:  13 Aug in Llandanwg and 30 Aug in Llaneddwyn.
