Update:  MargP mentioned the 1851 Census and a Jane Murray 32, servant at 'The Hill' Lansdowne House in Richmond, Surrey.  I think this fits perfectly.  She is one of only 2 people living there with Robert House, 66, gardener.  I would love to know how to find 'household' records from this era.
Richmond, Surrey fits perfectly as her son John was born there in 1860.  And yes I also believe that the birth record for John that states 'Jane Murray single woman' would be his.  Christened 2 years later in 1862.  It states that Jane was from 'Elstree, Herts.' at that time but couldn't find a family match - or a listing in the 1861 census for her.  I have turned to DNA testing at this point with John's grandchildren to hopefully solve this great mystery - and also who his father was.  The surnames Clark, Lillie, Hammond, Taylor, Ford, Strong, Barrett and Walker are prominent within matches to John Murray's side through DNA. Getting closer....  help is always still appreciated.  Thank you everyone.

Thank you to all who have tried a restoration of this photo.  Unfortunately the forum rules said I had to keep the photo under 500k, otherwise the original was a bigger size closer to 1mb.  I appreciate everyone's help.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Murray sisters from Walton? Hertfordshire
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much!  Jane Murray is a bit of a mystery.  My great grandfather, John Murray b. 1860ish never mentioned a father, only briefly his mother Jane and 'aunt Ellen' who raised him....  she was older when he was born and I believe single. The only fact we know is that Jane worked for an Oxford professor until he died in 1849. John said he was born in 'Richmond/Chertsey, Surrey' and there is a church record there showing a 'Jane Murray' single woman residing in Hertsfordshire at the time christening her 2 year old son John.  I was thinking that perhaps if this is my Jane she would have gone back to be with family while she had the baby?  I'm grasping at straws but determined to figure this out.
Thank you again for taking the time to send me all this information.

I realize this is intricate but if anyone can restore this photo, especially faces a bit more, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you so much for trying.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Murray sisters from Walton? Hertfordshire
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 01:38 BST (UK)  »
In the 1881 census, Jane Murray b. 1822 and her sisters, Mary A. Archer b.1825, and Eleanor E. Murray b.1843 are living together in Bromley, London, Middlesex.  They are ALL listed as being born in WALTON, Hertfordshire...  I would really like to find their birth records but Walton doesn't seem to exist.  Would anyone have an idea what this should be and have access to the corresponding parish records.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am hoping that this is my missing great-great grandmother, Jane.  Thank you.

Hertfordshire / Elstree School 1861
« on: Saturday 07 September 13 04:36 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be able to help me figure out where in the 1861 Census I would find the enumeration of the "Elstree School".  I couldn't find it on Ancestry under the  'Elstree' District.  It was a private school run by the Sanderson family from 1869 on.
Thanks for your help.

I'll post a link to your other thread as there's significant overlap:

I've had a look at Richard Berens' will as recorded in the National Archives and I must say I can't see any reference to being "in Tutor's service".

I actually have the written 'ledger' copy as well when the funds were given out.  This is where the note is written.

FH Documents and Artefacts / 1849 Will of Richard Berens, Esquire
« on: Friday 01 February 13 23:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of the Will of Richard Berens, Esquire - Bursar/Fellow All Souls College Oxford.  Among the list of servants that are recipients is my g-g grandmother.  Only she and one other gentleman have a note beside their names that says "if in 'Tutor's' Service".  What would this mean?  Was she a student/servant? Does 'Tutor' refer to something specific?
There are also some 'hieroglyphics' in the 'Consanguinity' column beside each name.  The one by hers almost looks like a scrawled 'F' and a capital 'E' without the top bar on it.  Would anyone know the meaning of this 'code'?  I've never been able to figure out from this Will if she 'worked' at his Queen Street, Mayfair home, or perhaps Oxford home...   Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Quite often, when a servent was left money in the will of their employer, the will stipulated that the servant should only get the bequest if they were still working for the employer when the employer died ie "if (still) in tutor's service".  Was Richard Berens referred to as "a tutor" in the will? After all, several years could elapse between the will being written and the writer dying, and many servants may come and go in that time.

If you have the will, perhaps you could have a look to see when it was written - if it was many years before 1849, then "Workhouse Jane" would have certainly been too young at that point to be left a bequest for her "care and attention towards him"

The Will was written March 9, 1849 and he died June 13th, 1849.  I agree, I'm also thinking that 'Workhouse Jane' can't be her as I don't think a 13 year old could give the  'care and attention' to receive 50 pounds and a brand new 3 volume set of Bibles!
