Scotland / Alleyne in Scotland?

This is a very new interest for me.
I am trying to find out info on my paternal grandfather. A Scot. Who travelled from a yet unknown part of Scotland to Panama to work on the most exciting new-build at the time - the Canal - a popular means of employment in the West Indies at that time. This courageous young man stopped off in Barbados en route and found himself a local bride. He proceeded to Panama with an additional incentive - to make a home for his new bride. He sent for her. She chose not to follow him. Nine (9) months later my father was born in Barbados in 1917. My grandfather never recovered from the disappointment. All I have is my grandfather's full name but no dates and can only surmise his age based upon my father's birth date.
Can someone assist me with a starting point please?
