Jacob Leak/Leake was born about 1785-1790 in Ireland and died in 1837 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario.  His birth date is an estimate based on the fact that he had 3 children born between about 1811 and 1815.  In Canada, they attended the Church of England so I suspect they attended the Church of Ireland in Ireland.
I have found 2 Tithe Applotment records which I believe to be his:
Tithe Applotment Books
Name   Jacob Leake ( stroked out and noted now Paul Lewis for 8 consecutive properties)
Event Type   Tax Assessment
Event Year   1826
Townland   Clomantagh St. George
Parish   Freshford
County   Kilkenny

Tithe Applotment Books
Name   Jacob Leak
Event Type   Tax Assessment
Event Year   1827
Townland   Clomantagh St George
Parish   Clomantagh
County   Kilkenny

Family history reports that he immigrated to Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario sometime in the late 1820’s or early 1830’s with his 3 small children Henrietta born about 1811, Margaret born about 1807-1812 and Peter born about 1815.  His wife did not accompany him and we believe that she died in Ireland.
According to the Ramsay township papers he was granted the land on N/E ˝, Lot 4 Conc 6 on 21 Dec 1832.

I would like to find out more information about my 4th great grandfather and his family.  Who was his wife and when did she die?  Where is the closest church of Ireland to Clomantagh St. George townland which the family might have attended.

I have searched extensively for decades for this family and do not have any more information than this.  The did settle in an Lanark County, Ontario where many of my other ancestors settled so I suspect that his wife is related to one of those families.   Any assistance or suggestions you may have for me will be greatly appreciated.

The parish records I checked were baptisms 1759-1787 and marriages 1760 1808. I chose those dates to see what Wyse/Wise and Connors might appear in this period. I did not think of a different parish for Michael Wyse but I will try that too.  Although I did several searches on just Waterford County.  So that will certainly be worth doing.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your suggestion.  Yes, I tried this site earlier this week and I think it will be worthwhile scrolling through the baptisms & marriages for the probable time periods.  It is amazing to know that we can actually see these records after such a long time.  I will let you know if I find any connections.

Thank you

Hi:  I am researching the Wyse family of St. John’s without, Waterford, Ireland.  Michael Wyse and Ellen Connors were married 24 Feb 1811 at St John's Parish, Waterford City, County Waterford.  They were Roman Catholic, no parents were listed but the witnesses were Witnesses John Connors & Matthew Machey.  Their son, Andrew Wyse was born in 1811 (according to various documents in the USA) but I cannot find a baptism record for him or the baptisms of any other siblings.  Based on the marriage location the title records for Ellen Wyse below , what church would this family have attended and baptized their children?  If possible, could someone to do a lookup for the baptism of Andrew Wyse in 1811/1812, please?

My second question has to do with how I can move forward with the following tithe records to prove/disprove that these are my ancestors:
It appears that Michael Wyse may have died before 1834 because Ellen appears to be on her own from 1834 on.  Is that a reasonable assumption to make?
The tithes place Ellen Wyse as follows:
1834 Carrig West Townland, St John's Without, Waterford, 1835 Ballytruckle Townland, St John's Without, Gaultiere, Waterford,  and Waterford Townland, St John's Without, Waterford and 1845 Ballytruckle, St John's Without, Gaultiere, Waterford.  According to Griffiths Valuation, Ellen Wyse is located at Ballytruckle Townland, St John's Without, Gaultiere, Waterford.
The tithe records place a  Michael Wyse in  1849 Ballytruckle Townland, St John's Without, Gaultiere, Waterford, Ireland, 1847 Crooke, Crooke, Gaultiere, Waterford, 1846 Crooke, Crooke, Gaultiere, Waterford, 1853 Crooke, Crooke, Gaultiere, Waterford.  I am thinking that this may be a son of Michael Wyse & Ellen Connors as he appears in Ballytruckle Townland in 1849.

The tithe records places an Andrew Wyse in 1845 Ballycourdra, St Johns Without, Gaultiere, Waterford, Ireland and I think this could be my Andrew, son of Michael Wyse & Ellen Connors.  Andrew immigrated to Buffalo, New York, USA and first record I have of him there isJuly 22 1849 when he married Jane Nickles.

I appreciate any advice you have to share with me.

Thank you so much for looking this information up for me.  I am certain that these people will be related to my Peter Foy because of the location in Rathoath.  I have done a few quick searches on the 4 names you included but did not come up with anything.  I will just keep trying.

You need not put the originals in dropbox as it is a lot of trouble.  I am grateful for the time you have spent already.

Have a great day!

Hi Kevin:  Thank you for taking the time to answer my query.  I have seen the Griffith Valuation and agree that these Foy's are probably related to my Peter Foy but have not been able to find any information on them either.

I would very much appreciate if you could do a quick look-up for me when you are next at the National Library in Dublin because I live in Canada and it is not possible for me to do it.  Thank you so much.

Meath / Peter FOY born 1792 or 1793

I am searching for my ancestor, Peter FOY/E.  According to a an attestation report which I have, he enlisted in the military on January 15, 1811 in Dublin, Ireland.  His age was recorded as 18 and his place of birth was listed as Rathoath, Meath, under a column titled "“County, City or Town of birth place”.  Unfortunately, I cannot tell if it was Rathoath Town or Rathoath Parish.

What I do know for sure is that Peter Foy was a private in the 100th Regiment of Foot (Prince Regent's County of Dublin Regiment).   He fought in the War of 1812 with the British in Canada against the Americans.  According to a report of losses by the 100th regiment of foot, he was located at the following places of battle:
- on July 5, 1814 he was serving under General Phineas Raille in Chippawa, Upper Canada (now Ontario).
-on October 20, 1814 he is recorded again in battle at Chippawa , Upper Canada.
-on December 19, 1815 he is recorded in battle at Fort Niagara, Upper Canada.

The 100th Regiment of Foot was renamed to the 99th Regiment of Foot in 1816 and after the war ended , it was dis-banned in 1818.  The veterans of this regiment were offered land in Ontario to ensure that the Britain had  loyal citizens to guard the Canadian border, in the event of another threat from the American.

Apparently Peter Foy did not take up the offer because he settled in Vaudreuil, Quebec (near Montreal).  He married Eleanor Thomas (who was Anglican) in 1819 and had 3 sons.  I do not know his religion but suspect that he may have been roman catholic. He died about 1851 in Vaudreuil, Quebec.

I have been unsuccessful in finding Peter Foy in Ireland and have only found a few Foys in Meath.    I would like to establish who his parents and siblings were so that I can move backward with my ancestors.  If anyone can provide advice on obtaining information from military records or parish records, I would be very appreciative.  Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Yours truly
Helen, Canada

Stirlingshire / Re: McGee & McFadden of Falkirk
« on: Monday 08 December 08 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Anne:  Thank you so much for the clever work with the census records and the death of Elizabeth in 1863.  I have followed-up your work and indeed, the 1881 census record was for Richard McGhee and Elizabeth Gemmels.  I have found several of the childrens' baptism records on LDS and they all line up.  I got the marriage record for Richard McGhee and Elizabeth Gemmels July 1, 1862, Falkirk which lists his parents as: Richard McGhee and Margaret Turner.  I cannot make all of the writing out as it is a very poor copy but Elizabeths parents are listed as ----Gemmels, deceased and Elizabeth MacRorie.  I have seached some of the parish records and I think that her name is more likely Elizabeth McCrorie but I will have to do a lot more work to figure that out.

As far as the McFadyens go the birth record for Charles May 21, 1895, Rowantreefauld, Lennoxtown gave his parents as Hugh McFadyen, chemical work labourer and Annie McIvor married Feb 2, 1892 in Saint Johnston (Donegal) near Londonderry, Ireland.  I then found a death record for Hugh McFadyen Dec 13, 1896, age 26 years.  It lists his parents as Charles McFadyen and Rebecca Fleming, both deceased.  I have not had any luck in finding these folks in either Scotland or Ireland but I will keep trying.

Thanks to you, I have been able to establish these families in Scotland.  I am very, very grateful for your help.  I will continue my search for these families but at least I now have some names, locations and verification that they are my folks.

Sincerely, Helen
