Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Henry Henry of Manchester 1851/1861
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 10:06 GMT (UK) »Hey Debbie, I'm not sure I have the right Henry Henry. Mine was born 28 Aug 1851, somewhere in England. He emigrated to the US, first to Manhattan, NYC, NY and later to Chicago. He and his wife Sophie Pinkus Henry had a bunch of kids, but I think most or all were born in the US. He died in Chicago 30 Jul 1922.
Your Henry Henry appeared to have died in England. Mine was naturalized in the US and died in the US. He's buried in the B'Nai Brith cemetery (a Jewish Cemetery) with Sophie. I think mine was actually Henry H. Henry, but can't be positive since it was verbal history.
Am I interpreting the thread correctly, or is it one and the same Henry??? Some of the facts fit... Belarus. Jewish, Henry Henry...
Hi. My name is Bambi. I live in the USA in the State of Arizona. I think I am a relative of yours. Henry Henry was my grandmother's father. Her name was Sadie Nelson and was a nurse at Cook County Hospital. I am trying to do some genealogy and was brought to this site in my "struggle" to find my identity. This is as far as I've gotten. Now, we have a famous person in the states who is also related to us....Lou Boudreau. He's in our Baseball's Hall of Fame. His mother is my grandmothers sister. Here's what his follower's found about him.....His grandparents were Henry Henry and Sophie Pinkus (Yiddish and was from the Ashkenazic jewish lineage). He was born in England and Sophie in Prussia. Henry made slippers. Sophie stayed home and had children...my grandmother one of them. I also had a great uncle Jake and Abe and aunt Birdie, Dora, Hazel and others I don't remember. I understand they are both buried in the B'Nai Brith Cemetery in Chicago so I guess that makes them both Jewish...but I've never heard of Henry as a jewish name. Good to find someone else who is on their discovery and making headway.
Hi Ladies,
It looks like the two of you are related but it appears your Henry Henry is a different one to mine.
I have done further research and my Henry definitely didn't go to the US and I have found his grave in Manchester.
His son Henry Washington Henry (b1949) who is of an age to your Henry also died in Manchester in 1883 and is buried near his father in Southern Cemetery. He never married and is found in England on both the 1871 and 1881 census still living with his father and siblings.
Although there is no link between us what I did find was that the Russian name of my ancestor was Hertzberg. The name was actually retained as a middle name of James Hertzberg Henry (son of Henry Henry and Ann Milner and brother of Henry Washington Henry).
The other thing I also found was that their coming from Belarus was an assumption of an author who wrote about them long after and may not be 100% correct. On the official documents there is a definite record of the places White Russia, Mogilev and Podolia (but not Belarus). The only mention of Belarus was in the book about Manchester Jewry. What I have since found is that there is a region called Podolia in Ukraine that has a location called Mogilev and I suspect that they come from there rather than Belarus. There is a region called Mogilev in Belarus but I could only find one tiny town that could be interpreted as Podolia - but at a stretch - whereas the Ukrainian link seems much stronger as the names fit without interpretation. That region of Ukraine was also part of White Russia and the Pale of Settlement.
The Jewish Genealogy society told me that the name Hertzberg was a German name so it is likely that my family moved from Germany to White Russia at some stage.
My family moved to England about 1825 and the most likely reason is because of the Czars policies related to Jews. Since 1815 the Jews had been moved into the region known as the Pale and had significant laws against them that affected their ability to own property and run certain businesses. When Nicholas I took over in 1825 he sought to destroy Jewish life. One of his acts was to conscript young Jewish boys into the army from aged 12. Given that Phineas (Henry Henry's father) had at least one son of this age it appears the main reason that he went to England was to save his son. I have found no other information about any other family members other than Phineas supposedly had a brother called Peter but other than in the Manchester Jewry book can find no record of him. I also have no idea what happened to the family left behind in Russia.
Good luck with your search and if you find your Henry's were originally Hertzbergs let me know and we can further investigate a possible link further back than our currently identified generations.
