Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Henry Henry of Manchester 1851/1861
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 10:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hey Debbie, I'm not sure I have the right Henry Henry.  Mine was born 28 Aug 1851, somewhere in England.  He emigrated to the US, first to Manhattan, NYC, NY and later to Chicago.  He and his wife Sophie Pinkus Henry had a bunch of kids, but I think most or all were born in the US.  He died in Chicago 30 Jul 1922.

Your Henry Henry appeared to have died in England.  Mine was naturalized in the US and died in the US.  He's buried in the B'Nai Brith cemetery (a Jewish Cemetery) with Sophie.  I think mine was actually Henry H. Henry, but can't be positive since it was verbal history.

Am I interpreting the thread correctly, or is it one and the same Henry???  Some of the facts fit... Belarus.  Jewish, Henry Henry...

Hi. My name is Bambi.  I live in the USA in the State of Arizona.  I think I am a relative of yours. Henry Henry was my grandmother's father.  Her name was Sadie Nelson and was a nurse at Cook County Hospital. I am trying to do some genealogy and was brought to this site in my "struggle" to find my identity.  This is as far as I've gotten. Now, we have a famous person in the states who is also related to us....Lou Boudreau. He's in our Baseball's Hall of Fame.  His mother is my grandmothers sister. Here's what his follower's found about him.....His grandparents were Henry Henry and Sophie Pinkus (Yiddish and was from the Ashkenazic jewish lineage). He was born in England and Sophie in Prussia. Henry made slippers. Sophie stayed home and had children...my grandmother one of them. I also had a great uncle Jake and Abe and aunt Birdie, Dora, Hazel and others I don't remember.  I understand they are both buried in the B'Nai Brith Cemetery in Chicago so I guess that makes them both Jewish...but I've never heard of Henry as a jewish name. Good to find someone else who is on their discovery and making headway.

Hi Ladies,

It looks like the two of you are related but it appears your Henry Henry is a different one to mine.

I have done further research and my Henry definitely didn't go to the US and I have found his grave in Manchester.

His son Henry Washington Henry (b1949) who is of an age to your Henry also died in Manchester in 1883 and is buried near his father in Southern Cemetery.  He never married and is found in England on both the 1871 and 1881 census still living with his father and siblings.

Although there is no link between us what I did find was that the Russian name of my ancestor was Hertzberg.  The name was actually retained as a middle name of James Hertzberg Henry (son of Henry Henry and Ann Milner and brother of Henry Washington Henry).

The other thing I also found was that their coming from Belarus was an assumption of an author who wrote about them long after and may not be 100% correct.  On the official documents there is a definite record of the places White Russia, Mogilev and Podolia (but not Belarus).  The only mention of Belarus was in the book about Manchester Jewry.  What I have since found is that there is a region called Podolia in Ukraine that has a location called Mogilev and I suspect that they come from there rather than Belarus.  There is a region called Mogilev in Belarus but I could only find one tiny town that could be interpreted as Podolia - but at a stretch - whereas the Ukrainian link seems much stronger as the names fit without interpretation.  That region of Ukraine was also part of White Russia and the Pale of Settlement.

The Jewish Genealogy society told me that the name Hertzberg was a German name so it is likely that my family moved from Germany to White Russia at some stage.

My family moved to England about 1825 and the most likely reason is because of the Czars policies related to Jews.  Since 1815 the Jews had been moved into the region known as the Pale and had significant laws against them that affected their ability to own property and run certain businesses.  When Nicholas I took over in 1825 he sought to destroy Jewish life.  One of his acts was to conscript young Jewish boys into the army from aged 12.  Given that Phineas (Henry Henry's father) had at least one son of this age it appears the main reason that he went to England was to save his son.  I have found no other information about any other family members other than Phineas supposedly had a brother called Peter but other than in the Manchester Jewry book can find no record of him.  I also have no idea what happened to the family left behind in Russia.

Good luck with your search and if you find your Henry's were originally Hertzbergs let me know and we can further investigate a possible link further back than our currently identified generations.

Hi Shane,

We might be related as the Nicholas Thompson recorded to this couple is the man I think is my 3x GGrandfather, although it should be noted the birth years are not a perfect match on the 1881 census and I have not yet been able to find either of his marriage records to see if his father is listed.

Her married two Mary's Mary Connell and Mary Daley.

The family are in London on the 1881 census

Nicholas Thompson b1838 Head
Mary Thompson b1837 Wife
Patrick Clifford b1859 Step Son
Elizabeth Thompson b1864 Daughter (my 2x G Grandmother)
(no IGI found Ballyclough indicated on other docs)
Philip Thompson b1865 Son
(IGI C701255 b1865 Ballyclough son of Nicholas Thompson & Mary Jane Connell)
Matthew Thompson b1868 Son
(IGI C012558 b1867 Cork son of Nicholas Thompson & Mary Connell)
Holey (Holly) Thompson b1870 Son
(IGI C012193 b1870 Cork son of Nicholas Thompson & Mary Connell)
Mary Thompson b1874 Daughter
(IGI C701504 b1872 Cork daughter of Nicholas Thompson & Mary Connell)
Nicholas J Thompson b1876 Son
(IGI C701595 b1875 Cork son of Nicholas Thompson & Mary Daley)
Sarah J Thompson b1879 Daughter

I found a Nicholas on the 1871 census as who I think is the same Nicholas.  He is living as a boarder in London with the Russell family working as a labourer in the market gardens.  There is no record of the rest of the family in England in 1871, so if it is him I suspect he came over looking for work.

On Elizabeth's marriage certificate Nicholas is listed as a bricklayer but on the 1881 census he is an unemployed general labourer.

I found Holy on the 1911 Irish Cork census married to Ellen with four children, including a son called Nicholas.  So obviously he returned to Ireland.

Other than my 2x GGrandmother I can't find the rest of them on the 1891 census.  My 2x GG married Alfred Seabrook in 1887 and stayed in the UK.

I am in Australia so have no way of seeing the Irish records but if you have any other info that may confirm one way or the other I'd love to share.

And just a little bit more

It looks like he was a juror on an inquest into the death of Thomas Jarrett in Brede on 15 Dec 1794. Thomas apparently hanged himself 'being lunatic' in Brake's Wood on 13 Dec.

Sean

Hi Sean,

I have several ancestors & relatives with the name Thomas Jarrett for whom I do not have death details and who might be this person.

The information I have is sourced from the Brede parish records and these are the possibilities - could you please indicate if the information in the inquest confirms any of the details I have or indicates which was the Thomas in question:

Thomas Jarrett chr 22 Feb 1718 Brede son of Thomas Jarrett (of Iden) & Elizabeth
married
Hannah Furmingar

their children
Henry Oct 1738 - Oct 1794
Thomas 1741 - 1776 (death TBC think this may be his fathers)
William b1744 - 1745
Mary Jun 1746
Edward May 1751
John Dec 1753 - May 1754

Thomas b1741 married Mary Elphick or Butcher

« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 07:26 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Allan and Beannie for the info.

I think we can be pretty confident now that their Jewish surname was Hertz or Hertzberg.  On the surnames origin site it indicates that this name was Russian or German in origin and meant hardy or brave.  It was known to be used by Jewish people.

With regards to the origin of the Henry / Hertz family the following evidence has been found:

1.  On Phineas' naturalisation papers it indicates he is Russian from Mogilev.
2.  Census documents:
a.  1841 Phineas  Foreign
b.  1841 Henry     Foreign
c.  1851 Phineas  In Russia Podoloe
d.  1851 Henry   Illegible possibly Russia
e.  1861 Henry  Russia
f.   1871 Henry  Russia
g.  1881 Henry  Russia
h.  1891 Henry  Molely South Russia

In the book "The Making of Manchester Jewry" Bill Williams states that Phineas and his brother Peter came from Mogilev White Russia.

Initially I thought that the family were from Mogilev Belarus as when you put Mogilev into Google it brings up this province in Belarus.  There is a town within Mogilev called Plodoyski which was the closes I could find to Podoloe.

However further investigation has found there is a region in the Ukraine called Podolia (also spelled Podilia or Podillya).  This area is in southern region and one of the key areas of settlement is Mohyliv (also spelled Mogilev).

The Ukrainian location seems to fit the data better and in Mogilev in 1897 the Jewish population was over 50% of the total population.  I could not find any population statistics for Plodoyski however there was a Jewish population in Mogilev Belarus.  The main point that makes me lean towards the Ukraine is the description on the 1891 census of South Russia as this is an apt description for the Ukraine location as compared to the Mogilev Belarus location which is not in the Southern area of Russia.

It should be noted that in the book by Bill Williams he refers to them coming from White Russia which is the name given to Belarus however his reference is Phineas' naturalisation documents which only specify Mogilev Russia not White Russia.

Hi Beanie,

Henry married Ann Alice Milner daughter of James Milner (a teacher in Appleby but originally from Nottingham) and Mary Hirst.

They married on the 18th May 1840 at St Michael's Appleby Westmoreland.  It appears that Henry converted from Judaism to Christianity either before or as a consequence of his marriage.  Ann Alice died of rheumetism at 114 Chatham St on 16 Feb 1862.  Henry died on 17 Aug 1894 at 461 Edge Lane, Droylsdon of senile decay.

Their children were:

1.  Phineas Henry b 1 Apr 1841.  Henry was indeed blind and this is recorded on a number of the census.  He lived with his family his whole life and died 20 Sep 1911 at Chorlton.  He is buried at in the C of E section of the Southern Cemetery Manchester grave 1144.

2.  James H Henry was born about 1844 I have no further details on him yet.

3.  Mary Alice was born about 1846.   She married Arthur Finch a veterinary surgeon in 1875 at Chorlton.  Their children were Amelia Rose b1876, Edith Isabella b1877, Gertrude b1879 and Arthur Denham b2 Jun 1881.   Mary was known as Alice.  She died Jan 1908 in Bromley Kent.

4.  Henry Washington born about 1850.  He appears to have never married.  He died in Jan 1883 and was buried on  29 Jan 1883 in the C of E section of the Southern Cemetery Manchester grave 650, his address is the same as the 1881 census on the burial register.  In 1881 he was working as a salesman in his father's cigar shop and still living at home.

5.  Emma b1853.  She married Charles J A Mason in early 1875.  Her daughter Emma Mason was born in late 1875 at Wrexham Wales.

6.  Alfred Henry b1855c

7.  Albert Lilford b1858. No further details.

On the 1851 census Phineas and James can be seen clearly but there are another three entries under this before the line separating them from the next family.  One of them will be Mary and one Henry but there may be another child, a visiting relative or a servant living with them too.

On the census and other documents I found the following addresses:
1894 461 Edge Lane, Droysldon
1891 461 Edge Lane Droysldon
1881  99 Warwick St Chorlton
1871  73 Warwick St Chorlton
1862  114 Chatham St Chorlton
1861  114 Chatham St Chorlton
1851  55 Everton Rd Chorlton
1841  169 Medlock St Hulme

HI,  Yes I ended up getting a copy of his naturalisation certificate which confirmed he was a Russian from Belarus.  And a book called "The Making of Manchester Jewry" confirmed him as a prominent Jew in the late 1820s even holding a seat on the synagogue.  I was able to match the details in the book with his job and address details in the census, but I have not yet been able to find his Jewish / Russian name.  I put a notice in a Jewish newspaper online in Manchester and contacted the Jewish museum but no luck so far.  The museum was undergoing renovations at the time so they could not look up any records for me and must admit I have not got back to them yet.  I am hoping the minutes / records at the time of the synagogue may indicate Henry's Jewish name.

I am researching from Australia and have come to a bit of a dead end.  Would be interested to hear from anyone who is related or has info that might be of use.

My dead end is with the most distant ancestor Peter Porteous.

The last fully detailed ancestor was Robert Porteous b1784 who was married to 1. Christina Todd & 2. Janet Dickson.  Robert's parents are listed as Peter Porteous and Janet Sanderson.  Roberts siblings were Jean b1797 and Margaret b1801.

I can find no marriage record for Peter and Janet.  I have found a death record that might be Peters on 11 Dec 1822 but there are no further details to indicate who his parents were.  I can find no death record for Janet and no record of tomb stones for either of them or their children.

I have a speculative birth record for Peter 2 May 1745 being the son of George Porteous and Margaret Marshall at Abercorn but no other records eg the marriage entry to corroborate if this is accurate or not.  Also the town is different but not too far from West Linton.

The Porteous' I have are as follows
