Cheshire / Re: Poulton-cum-Seacombe living conditions in 1851

Hi,
Good to have a cousin-contact. I've quite a bit of information about some of them, and have come across the McGeochs, which is how their name should be spelt. We're still not sure how to pronounce it though! I think it might be easier to contact you offline. Will have to dig out my records too!

Hi, my gggrandfather was Thomas Millington, b.1823, son of James Millington & Sarah Davies. His brothers were David & John, as in your tree. Thomas married Margaret Jones, (widow, nee Smith, dau. of Thomas Smith), on 23rd March 1854 at St. Nicholas, Liverpool. They were the parents of my greatgrandmother Margaret Millington.

US Lookup Requests / Re: Annie Jones (Pemberton, Roberts) b.1844 Seacombe, Cheshire

Hi Sandra & Shelley,
Thanks very much for the census information but I don't think it fits - Annie's mother was a Margaret but she was Millington, having remarried after Annie's father died. Members of the family moved to the U.S. which was why I hoped she could have gone there too. I'll keep on hoping to find her some day!

US Lookup Requests / Annie Jones (Pemberton, Roberts) b.1844 Seacombe, Cheshire

I have been trying to trace Annie Jones, b. Seacombe, Cheshire, England in 1844. She married John Johnson Pemberton & had 2 daughters, Clara Louise Pemberton & Eleanor Johnson Pemberton. She apparently left her daughters after her husband died. I have ancestry membership(but not for the U.S.) & an ancestry hint for Annie suggests that she might be Annie Roberts in Oneida, New York on the NY State census 1875. I don't have access to U.S. records & wonder if anyone can check it for me please? It's possible that she married 'a Roberts' in the USA as I can't find an english record for a marriage. Thanks.

Montgomeryshire Lookup Requests / Re: GLADYS SHONE - birth/baptism 1889/90
« on: Sunday 23 March 14 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks very much for the suggestions. I'd already thought that Charlotte might have been Gladys because I couldn't find her on later censuses but then I found a Lottie Shone on the 1901 census in Wales so think she might be that Charlotte.
I don't think the Stockport one is her because 'my' Gladys is on the 1891 census as age 1.

There's an interesting thing on the 1901 census which names Gladys as Gladys HOWELL and describes her as illegitimate.
She's back as Shone on the 1911 census.

Unfortunately I don't know Gladys's mother's first name at the moment - I'm researching for a friend. I've been told that she's believed to have gone abroad but no one knows where. Have asked for her name but not been told yet.
When I know her first name I can contact the register office to get the certificate for Charlotte if the details  - mother's name & no father - match for Gladys although having come across Lottie Shone, I' m not very optimistic.
Thanks again,
kater

Montgomeryshire Lookup Requests / GLADYS SHONE - birth/baptism 1889/90
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth or baptism record for GLADYS SHONE who is recorded on the 1891 & later censuses as being born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire.
She was living in Wirral when she was just one year old & I know that her mother was unmarried & was not living with her there.
I have been unable to find her on BMD in Newtown or any other place. Is there any other record I could consult?
Thanks.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: False Information On Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 22:23 BST (UK)  »
I agree that some of our ancestors went to the U.S.A. 'unexpectedly'.

I was doubtful about someone in my tree but when I contacted the person who entered him they were able to show it was correct.

He'd abandoned his wife & family in England.

I was able to confirm the story when I found the errant husband's wife & daughter's return passage to this country without him. They'd failed to persuade him to come home.

However, I've also got my gggrandfather from Salford being listed as born in Manchester, Jamaica, in one person's tree. Presumably their finger slipped when they were entering it.

I plead guilty to one set of errors myself - I was changing one person's erroneous surname & inadvertently pressed the button to change the rest of the family too!
I couldn't find how to undo it - apologies.............

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: False Information On Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 07:37 BST (UK)  »
Another strange entry from an Ancestry enthusiast -

Just looking on Ancestry & found that my gggrandmother Jane BELLIS  was born in Hawarden, Flint, c.1830 & died in Wallasey, Cheshire, 1908, but was married in 1860 in Salt Lake City, U.S.A. to Charles Sturgess, a man who was not my gggrandfather, Peter DUCKWORTH.

Somehow she managed to get back to England to appear on the 1861 census with Peter & her daughter Florence Jane!

The birth & death information was correct & presumably copied from my tree.

I've never been able to find her birth registered or a marriage record for her & Peter but I know from censuses she was born in Hawarden & was intrigued that another Ancestry member had the name of her parents.
I contacted her to ask how she'd found Jane's parents but never received a reply. There are several Jane BELLIS born there around the same time & I assume she just took a random one.

I decided not to bother correcting the Salt Lake City entrant but it has appeared in other trees too.
