Ireland / Re: Shannon/McConnell
« on: Wednesday 15 February 23 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
Update: I did find on a son's death certificate he stated his parents, John Shannon and Mary Ann (Nancy) (Ann) McConnell were born in Roosky, Donegal, Ireland. Found there is an Upper and a Lower Roosky. Would this matter when searching for records? The Shannon's living in this area all share the same given names so it makes it difficult to know who belongs to what family or how they are related. Have not been successful in finding my John Shannon born about 1796. John and Mary (Ann) may have married in Raphoe and 3 of their children: John, Jr, Elizabeth, and Hugh were most likely christened at the same church. It appears their son, James married in 1852 in Londonderry to Jane Fleming (Flynn). Two of their youngest sons, Hugh and Robert stated they were born in Londonderry. According to an 1856 Iowa state census in the U. S. it appears the family didn't immigrate together although they all left Ireland by 1854. John Shannon and Mary Ann McConnell's known children: Margaret, James, William, John Jr, Elizabeth, Matilda, Hugh and Robert. There is a gap between births so other children may not have survived. I have been unsuccessful in finding information on this family in Ireland as it appears there are few records that survived or are indexed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Alexander Fraser Thomson Update
« on: Monday 27 February 17 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
So happy to hear from an Alexander Fraser Thomson descendant! I do have some information on Henrietta's second family. She married William Mock, not Benjamin. Henrietta and William had a son named Benjamin as well as Garfield and Mildred known as Millie. Some time ago I had been in touch with a Mock descendant. Henrietta and Alexander's daughter, Mary, married her stepbrother, Grant Mock. Have never been able to find where Alexander was buried. His father was still alive at the time of his death as well as other family members. Unfortunately, Alexander Thomson is a common name in Scotland so finding where he was buried is almost next to impossible without additional information. I do have a copy of his death record but it doesn't state where he was buried.

Since I was here last I found that my Shannon family probably lived in the Raymochy (Raymoughy) area. Other places mentioned were Ruskey, Rusky, or Roosky and Raphoe. I received a forwarded email from another researcher that stated there were Shannon relatives still living in the area. Hoping someone from the Shannon family or descendant will respond to this query. Suggestions on where to search in the area would be appreciated. My Shannon family left Ireland in the early 1850's.

Regards to all and thank you for your assistance.

Angus marriage record - I guess I was just confused with all the names repeating and forgot who I was looking for. Thank you for clarifying his marriage. I've just started reading "The Annals of Megantic County" and it's helping me keep the families straight although I think I still need a chart in front of me when researching them. The McKillop family is definitely challenging.

I have information on Archibald and Janet's son Angus which states he was born on the Isle of Arran and married Ann McGilvray in Quebec, Canada. On Ancestry I found an OPR with marriages and am confused why it was attached to Angus. Is the first name listed on the record the father of the groom? I'm assuming it is. So far I'm finding it difficult to read the record and am not sure what the connection to Angus is.

You may find of interest that Carrie McKillop's daughter Mary Ethel married John Stafford and their daughter was Jean Stafford who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In a biography of Jean's there is a chapter that mentions she travelled to the Isle of Arran but not much is written about her visit or the McKillop family. It is more or less what was going on in her life. Of what I have read about her she disliked her parents. I wonder if there had been anything written about her visit to Arran?

It doesn't look like Mary McKillop Thurber continued the naming pattern with her own children except for the first two. First born was Drusilla named for Mary's husband Harley's mother. Second born was Archibald assuming after Mary's father. But after that the names do not repeat. There is Calvin, Henry, Mary Jane, Martha, George Weber, Caroline Lee Jeanette or Janette and then Charles Edward. Archibald, Henry, George, and Charles died as infants or in childhood. Calvin died serving in the Civil War. Only her daughters survived to have families of their own. Only name that was repeated was Mary so no clues there.

Sorry I have been off searching other family lines. I didn't realize I had used an email address I don't often check so I didn't know anyone had responded.

Yes, Arranroots I believe this is my family. My great great great grandmother Mary McKillop Thurber was living in Missouri with her daughter, Carrie, who I think married a cousin, Malcolm McKillop. As you can see I have had difficulty researching this family with so many of the names being repeated over and over. Are you saying this manifest is incorrect and someone was trying to make them fit?

Greetings! I am searching for information about my 4th great grandparents Archibald McKillop and Janet McMillan or MacMillan. They left Arran for Canada in 1829. I am trying to find which village they were from and anything about their families. I do not know when or where they were married.

Regards,
Prairie
