Monaghan / Re: Michael Grant

Thanks for looking,
yes I have the marriage details of Michael and Robina from Scotlands People which state he was born in County Monaghan in 1825. His parents are noted as deceased on marriage cert. of 1855. His father is Robert and have been looking for his birth and marriage to Mary/Margaret Burns.

I have been looking for same marriage details for some time.  On Michael's death cert it states Mother as Margaret Burns.  Informant is son Robert. He could have been mistaken on his Grandmother's name but as Robina was still alive at the time you would think she would have told him the correct name. On the marriage cert it does look like Mary and you would think Michael would know the name of his Mother. Looking at the names of Michael's children Mary comes before Margaret so I think it more likely to be Mary. Unless of course she was named Margaret but was known as Mary!!

Would be helpful if we knew which part of Monaghan he came from.   Will keep searching and post if I eventually come across details  :)

Hi kimmck,

I don't have a connection with George and Susanna Rankin but am also descended from George/Mgt Goldie
and John/Mary Brackenridge.

The difficulty is that George's birth does not seem to appear on any of the OPRs.  As stated in my original post, Stair OPR has his age at death unknown and cause of death was 'frailty' old age.  Ochiltree OPR however has his age at death as 85y.  His memorial inscription in Ochiltree Churchyard states his age as 76y.

The only thing I know for sure is that he died in 1840 in Crosshill, Ochiltree.

Of John and Mary Brackenridge's children,

John b.1855 Riccarton died in 1910 in Detroit, Michigan.

William b. 1853 Riccarton died 19631 in Lewiston, Cache, Utah.

George b.1843 died 1908 in Riccarton. (I am descended from this George)

You have another John b.1885 d 1913 in St Quivox who does not belong
with this group of children.

If you have any luck with the parents and siblings of George and Mgt Goldie please let me know as this has been driving me mad for years.  On the plus side, I have ruled out lots of prospective parents. :)

Have tried various spellings of Goldie in searches.  LDS states Goldie or Goudie for Margaret.  Goldie on son John's death cert. but Gouldie on headstone.  Think it depends on who was writing it at the time and how they heard it pronounced as many could not write.
The information from the death cert. of George was really good thanks. Had a look at it on Scotlandspeople and think the margin notes say result of precognition? see reg of corr. entries.  As his death was the result of an accident I assume this entry has details of an inquest as I have come across this before, but there appears to be no way to view this at the moment.
I think that the birth entry you have found for Mgt in Maybole is very likely the correct one. LDS states her birth about 1774 and Maybole is not too far away from Ochiltree and Stair.
Did a search a couple of years ago on George senior and came up with a birth date of 1744 on the origins network .  You can order a transcription but only if you have the parents names and place of birth!  Bit of a catch 22 situation.
Couldn't find anything on Scotlandspeople.

Thanks for all your help :)

Hi L L
:)  Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.  It is much appreciated.

I am descended from John b.1804 and although I have some census information on the sons, I didn't have any details of the daughters and your Agnes information is really interesting.
The children listed on the IGI are:
James b. 1800
Agnes  b.1802
John  b.1804
Jean  b.1807
George b.1813
William  b1815
and Margaret  b. 1822.

I would like to be able to find the birth entries for both George McKnight and Margaret Goldie and also their marriage entry if this is a possibility. This would prove their respective ages.  Hopefully one day I may even discover the names of George's parents and be able to go back another generation!
Thanks again for your time.

George Mcknight b 1755-1777 Ochiltree ( Stair OPR has age at death as unknown. Ochiltree OPR has his age as 85 and headstone has his age as 76!) and wife Margaret Goldie/Gouldie b 1774 Ochiltree.  George died in 1840 and wife Margaret died aged 76 in 1850.
Am trying to connect him with John Mcknight and Jean Rankin family of New Cumnock.
Think I've hit my brick wall! Any help gratefully received.

Hi Kenny,

Check out the Hugh Wagstaff/Margaret Weir thread a few posts down the page.  Pringle information on the Coylton family. Might help a bit.

Thanks for your replies ,
it makes sense now! I had assumed she was living off some kind of church fund as she had two young children and no husband living at the address. ;D

much obliged

Hi Sandra,
sounds really good.  I am stuck in 1744 at the moment! Have a convict on one side transported to goodness knows where for stealing washing!  Another ancestor fought in the Peninsular War.  Trouble is I'm not exactly photogenic and very shy so don't think I could go on TV.  Maybe if you got Kate Winslet to be me :D
good luck with your quest
