Thanks Ruth - it's a definite possibility. It's one of those surnames that can be spelt any number of ways.

Gloucestershire / Bellinger/Bellenger/Ballinger Chedworth
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi if anyone has access to PRs for Chedworth (or perhaps Withington), I'm looking for an Elizabeth Bellinger born probably between 1795 and 1800. Any other Bellinger births there around that time are also of interest. Many thanks.

Hi my gt grandfather John Oakes died in Hillingdon workhouse in 1895.  I'm intersted in knowing why he was there (he died of "senile decay" though only 57) and whether workhouse records are available anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Wakely or Wakley - Waddesdon, Upper Winchendon

Hi

Looking for a John Wakley or Wakely (or posibly Whatley) living in Waddesdon in 1844 and employed as a groom.

May have married Emily Cripps at Upper Winchendon although I can find no record. She had 3 children by him (including my gt grandfather Thomas born 1844) but I can find no trace of him anywhere.

Thanks for any help

John

Hi Pennie - thanks very much for that I'll certainly look into it. Yes I have the death cert, it would be nice to know a bit about the circumstances especially as one of her uncles (I think) was also burnt to death a few years earlier.

Hi Sue - yes I know - I'm clutching at straws a bit. I only know he says he was born at Glemsford but there are no records of him there.  And they may have moved of course.
I'm aware that they weren't always accurate with these things anyway - another relative gives different birthplaces on different censuses; when parents died young these things sometimes got mixed up. I'm hoping the 1851 one will give an actual birthplace.

Is Hartismere a village as well as a registration district?

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 Census Lookup please - OAKES
« on: Friday 26 October 07 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi I'm looking for my gt grandfather John Henry Oakes without much success so far.

He is recorded on later censuses as having been born at Glemsford in 1837, but I've had no luck there.  The only census references I can see which fit this date are:-

1841 Hartismere   John Oakes aged 4
1851 Hoxne, Stradbroke  John Oakes aged 14

Could someone give me the full details of these please?  Many thanks

John
