Durham Lookup Requests / Re: MARLEY Elizabeth Ann - help needed please

Thank you for that - she has been very vague about her age - I think it was because she had to get married so it sounds better to be married at 20 than 18  ;)

That will start me off again. I really appreciate your help. Just think I wanted some reassurance I was on the right track.

Durham Lookup Requests / MARLEY Elizabeth Ann - help needed please
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I have just received a marriage certificate for my Great Grandparents on my mother's side and it has created more questions than it has solved.

It shows that Elizabeth Ann MARLEY was younger than I originally thought by 10 years as she was 20 years old when she married John Ashford TAYLOR in December 1900.

Her father is named as John MARLEY, a miner.

I know that she died in 1951 as I have her death certificate.

Family information I had received led me to believe that her father was William and that he had married an Ann Bowen. Obviously this is now not the case.

I am struggling to find the matches for this family on the censuses or find her birth record and wondered if anyone could help out please.

Thank you for your time.
Joanne

US Lookup Requests / Minnie Wheatley 1863, Jim Wheatley 1859
« on: Tuesday 26 October 10 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find information about the Wheatley family - sometimes spelt without the e.
The parents are Ralph Wheatley (b abt 1836, Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, England) and Jane nee Hobson (b abt 1839 Leeds, England)

They had a daughter Anne in 1856 in Stockton and then seem to have emigrated to America and had two children there - Jim b 1859 and Minnie b 1863. Unfortunately I have no idea where.

They then returned to the Stockton area, England before 1865 but I am struggling to find any information out about them around this time until the 1881 UK census. Can anyone help.

Passenger lists or birth records would be very helpful as I keep drawing a blank.
thanks a lot
Joanne

You are right - I am back to work soon and know I won't get as much time later so am trying to rush it and sort it. I will hold my horses and wait as you say and go that route.
Thankyou for all of your help you have been great. I will use this site regularly from now - it is very interesting.

Thanks Jennifer - they are really good sites.

I have now found William - Joseph's father in the 1901 census. Ref RG13/4702/50/19
He died before the 1911 as Hannah is registered as a widow living with some of her sons and a daughter. Ref RG14/29695

I am now trying to look for his birth certificate and there are two that I can find.
One is 1851 in Gateshead and the other is 1852 in Durham. Would it be possible for you to have a look and see which you think it would be. I am still getting my head around the parishes.

Thankyou
Joanne

Thankyou - I have ordered Hannah's birth certificate so I will wait and see what that brings and see what her maiden name is. The family names make more sense now.

The geography part is fascinating - I am now going to do a bit of research on this and try and plot a bit of where they moved around to. Does not mean a lot to me but my Mum has heard of some of the places.

Can't believe I made such a mistake but thankyou all for helping me to sort it out. I think when I was doing it in my eagerness years ago - I went racing on without verifying each step. Has definitely taught me a lesson.

Thankyou Jennifer - you have been an absolute star - I will do that as I was having no luck with Joseph either.

There are a few changes - for example for William in the 1881 census it says he was born in Newbottle and in the 1891 it says Haughton Parish. Are these the same or close?

For the mother Hannah it says Craghead for 1881 and West Stanley for 1891.

I think they were just trying to increase the challenge for me  ;D

Thanks - they did move around a lot - must have been following the work in the mines.

Yes - this opens up a lot
Looking at the 1881 and 1891 census - where do you think his sister was born. It says Kyo in the ancestry census I am looking at but I don't think it says that. Looks more like Rye to me?

Now his birth certificate and his parents marriage certificate. Have my work cut out I think.
Thankyou so much for your help. I was meant to put it on here  :)
