The Common Room / Re: Illegitimate Roman Catholic Birth
« on: Sunday 07 November 10 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you to you all for your replies.

My Gt. Grandmother did marry in a Catholic church and her children were all brought up in the faith. This was in Leeds West Yorkshire. Maybe the priests are more lenient in cities???

As the birth of my grandma and the marriage of my Gt. Grandma were so close together I think I may assume that the man she married was the father. Although if that is correct I can't understand why his name wasn't on the birth certificate.
Has anyone got a view on this.

The Common Room / Illegitimate Roman Catholic Birth
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered that my Grandma (Roman Catholic) was born illegitimately.
There is no fathers name on her birth certificate.
I have her mother's and what I though was her father's marriage certificate date 26th December 1898.
She was born 4th June 1898 a good 6 month before her 'parents' marriage.
Evidence on census records show she also had a brother 3 years older than her.

My question is this. How would her mother have been treated being a Roman Catholic and an unmarried mother of 2 children.

Can anyone advise please  :)

I am trying to find out whether my Gt. Grandfather divorced his first wife before marrying my Gt. Grandmother but don't know where I should look.

I have tried looking for the death of his first wife but can't find anything.

Europe / German Ancestry
« on: Friday 02 July 10 18:43 BST (UK)  »
A friend of mine is wanting to trace her family tree but she is from German ancestry.

I wondered if some nice person on here could advise where she should start looking.

Family stories have brought to light that her Grandmother was the illegitimate daughter of Martin Bormann. Does anyone know where she might look to investigate this claim further?

Thank you

Suffolk / Re: Gamekeepers Murder between 1871 and 1881

Well my ancestor's name was Robert Griggs. As for the Gamekeeper I don't know as it is a story that has come down through the family, and I suspect wasn't discussed in great length.

I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the direction of possible press cuttings of the era of unsolved murders, in the hope I might be able to link the two.

Suffolk / Gamekeepers Murder between 1871 and 1881
« on: Sunday 11 October 09 09:03 BST (UK)  »
A family story has just come to light regarding my 2x Gt. Grandfather. Originally from Mildenhall suffolk. It appears that sometime between 1871 and 1881 he had to move from Mildenhall to Leeds to excape capture for shooting a Gamekeeper dead whilst he was poaching.

I am trying to find any reference to this incident in the news papers of the time or anything online but without any success. Would appreciate some help please.

Pauline

I have just found out that my Gran was convicted and imprisoned for selling ration coupons after WWII.

I believe she was sent to Holloway prison.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find out more details of her conviction and sentence.

She lived in Wincester at the time

Yours hopefully.

Thank you so much for looking Heywood. It's much appreciated.

Can you tell me how you managed to search the parish register for Hunslet/Castleford on-line?

No I haven't tryied IGI as the search asks you for a First name, which I don't have, or have they changed it?
