Armed Forces / military(?) marker post
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
The attached photograph shows a post marked with an upward pointing arrow and the capital letter 'B' on one face.

It is in Norsey Wood in Billericay, Essex where the military had a presence in both World Wars.

I would be interested if anyone can shed some light on its purpose, please.

The Common Room / Re: whole village census returns
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 16:36 BST (UK)  »
:D I am truly impressed by the number of replies that my enquiry has received and extremely grateful to all!

My main reason for this particular research is to try to establish the occupations of the working population and from that to get an idea of how the land was worked and what produce grown. I realise that many will be ag labs but I'm hoping for better clues!!
This information will be used as an introduction to the description of a local area, around the village, where it is proposed a Living Landscape of wildlife corridors will be established.

Again, many thanks to all,
Tony

The Common Room / whole village census returns
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 19:41 BST (UK)  »
I would like to find census (of various dates) details of all the inhabitants of a small village. Apart from the village name,  I have no  names or street names. Is this possible to do?
Grateful for any suggestions.
Thank you,
Tony

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: dating photo
« on: Thursday 11 December 08 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
Jim, it is a postcard from the Pagett Collection in the Southend Museum and shows Billet Lane in Leigh-on- Sea, Essex. The lane originally lead down to the Crooked Billet pub in the Old Town, which still exists, until the railway cut it in half in the 1840's (I think). One Tree Island is in the murky distance

Irene. What an impressive example of colouring! It really improves and clarifies the photo. Thank you so much.

Many thanks for your message, Forrester. I apologise for the delay in replying.

It is a co-incidence that you mention the case of W Mason. My father had originally enlisted in the RAMC before transfer to the 4th BGOC "for the benefit of the service" as his AF B178 puts it.
Prior to enlistment, he was a railway clerk. In the 4th, he was a guard!

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do the initials SDGW stand for?

Thanks for the speedy response, Meles!

There seems to be a dearth of information on this subject.  I have come across the Australian BGOCs. I got the info about Dad from his discharge papers that the 41st was an RE unit, so I assume there is no connection with the Aussies (or, perhaps, could there have been?). I am just hoping someone might have had a similar connection.

My father served with the 41st Royal Engineers Broad Gauge Operating Company from June '17.
I would be very grateful for any hints where information about the Coy's whereabouts and about BG Companies generally might be found
Thanks,
Tony
