Llanbadarn Trefeglwys is 21 miles from Llandysul so Im not sure if this is my Rachel.

Does anyone know if a Husband Man was the same thing as an agricultural labourer.

Thanks,

Cardiganshire Lookup Requests / Rachel Evans b abt. 1837
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find Rachel Evans who was born about 1837 nr Llandysul, Cardiganshire in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. I have found her in the 1861 through 1901 censuses when she was married to James James. On the wedding cert her fathers name is given as Evan Evans and his occupation is Husband man. One of the witnesses is Ann Evans, who I think may be her sister. On the 1861 to 1901 censuses her birth place is different in each census.

1861 - Llangunllo
1871 - Llenwu? (hard to read)
1881 - Penrhiwllan
1891 - Newcastle-in-Emlyn
1901 - Newcastle-in-Emlyn

The possibilities I have found are for

1841 census

HO107/1375/19 Folio 7 Page 3; (I cant find any of this family in later censuses. They werent living at this address, Blaninon, Capel Dewi, at the time of the following census in 1851)

HO107/1373/5  Folio 36 Page 13; (one of the sisters is called Ann, but Llanbadarn tref Eglwys seems too far from Llandysil to be right?)

1851 Census
HO107/2484 Folio 78 Page 21
HO107/2482 Folio 598 Page 19
HO107/2482 Folio 661 Page 11

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm trying to find some information about someone who was sentenced to 2 months in prison in 1903 by Aberdare police court. I am trying to find out which prison they were sent to, what life was like in the prison at that time and if there might be any records of the inmates available anywhere.

Any help appreciated

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Rachel James death
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the death certificate of my G-G-grandmother Rachel James (nee Evans). She was born abt. 1837 in Llandysul, Cardiganshire. She was living at 54 Jenkin St, Cap Coch, Aberdare when her husband James died in 1903. None of the records I have found on ancestry.co.uk are for her death. As she was originally from Llandysul it may be possible she moved back there or else was taken back there to be buried.
These certificates I have checked so far are
  • 1903, Jun, Pontypridd, 11a, 254
  • 1912, Oct, Merthyr tydfil, 11a, 739
  • 1914, Jul, Newcastle-in-Emlyn, 11b, 26
  • 1905, Oct, Newcastle in Emlyn, 11b, 12
  • 1918, Apr, Newport M, 11a, 299
  • Any help tracing the record would be appreciated.

Carmarthenshire Lookup Requests / Hannah Francis (b. abt 1846)
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 23:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the birth certificate of my G-G-Grandmother Hannah Francis (also known as Anna) who according to census records was born in Llanelly abt. 1846. There is one Annah Francis on ancestry.co.uk who was born in Llanelly in 1846 but she is not the right one as her parens were not John Francs and Martha Owen. I would be grateful for any help in tracking down the certificate.

Thanks,

Carmarthenshire Lookup Requests / Mary Ann Harris b.1867
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth certifiate of my great grandmother Mary Ann Harris who according to census records was born in Llanelly abt 1867 to Nun Harries and Hannah Francis. The surname is sometimes spelled Harry and sometimes Harries. There is one record for Mary Ann Harris born in 1867 on ancestry.co.uk but I have obtained the certificate and it is not the right one (1867, Jun, Llanelly, 11a, 678). I have also requested certificates for the Mary Ann Harries, Mary Ann Harry's etc who were born between 1866 and 1868 in Llanelly, but as none of their fathers were named Nun Harris no certificates were sent. I would be grateful for any assistance in tracking down the birth certificate.

Thanks

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Abercarn mining accident abt 1912
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more information about my grandfather's first husband David James Jones who is believed to have died in a mining accident sometime between 1910 and 1915. My grandmother Hannah Maria James was living with David at 20 Gwyddon Road, Abercarn in August 1910. I have checked the directory of mining deaths at Pontypridd library and found 3 David James Jones who died about this time. However, the mines where they died seem to me to be too far from Abercarn to have been my grandmothers husband. The closest was an accident at McClaren No. 3 in Abertwssyg in 1912, but I have obtained this certificate and it is a David John Jones. I would be interested to know how far miners would typically travel to work at this time and the names of the pits in the Abercarn area where David might have worked.

Thanks,

NH

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: Hannah Maria James marriage
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Cas,

Thanks very much for your reply to my post. I think it is very likely that this is my grandmothers wedding. On her daughters birth certificate she gives her name as Annie M Jones (formerly James). Assuming this is the wedding, this confirms they were in Abercarn before David died. As this shows the registrattion district was Bedwellty. I have looked for the deaths of David J Jones in Bedwellty. There was a David J Jones who died in Bedwellty in 1912. I then looked for mines in the Bedwellty area and came across the McClaren pit in Abertwssyg. This rang a bell as I have previously searched the directory of British mining deaths at Pontypridd library and there was a David J Jones who was killed at Mclaren No 3 at Abertwssyg. However, at that time I assumed that it was too far from Abercarn to have been my David J Jones. I have checked the distance and it is 16 miles by road though it may have been shorter on foot or maybe there was a railway line.. With this new information I think it is possible this is the right David. I will order the certificates and check.

Thanks again,

NH
