James  Fothergill & Mary Parkin at Birk Rigg are a common destination.  I spent several years  trying to find their parents.  The clue is to find the home of James Fothergill before he arrived at Birk Rigg. His first children were born at Deep Gill.  His parents at DeepGill farm were John Fothergill and Isabell Rudd. The grandparents were John Fothergill and Jane Birkbeck & John Rudd and Hannah Ellison.  More details are in my Family tree at Ancestry.com  (RWLONG)

I exchanged data with Richard Fothergill to define the Birk Rigg-A and -B Fothergill lines that he published in his excellent volumes on The Fothergill History.

The fascinating bit about this family is the rumor that the Carr End Fothergill family has roots at Deepgill. I'm hoping that the DNA programs will eventually validate the relationship between the families.

By the way the archives of RootsChat contain earller messages from me about this family.

Hi:  I have two dates for Isabel 10 Mar 1732 & 18 Apr 1732 & arbitrarily assigned the second date as the chnristening.  Otherwise we agree.

AARON:  The earlier ancestors of Deepgill are shown in Richard Fothergill's 1st book.  I have several pages of scans if you're interested.  How do I send them through this forum?

Hi:
You added a few details to what I had on Isabell Rudd's parents --thanks.

The reference to John Fothergill of Nateby doesn't seem to match any of the Nateby lin in Richard Fothergill's second book.  Had you anticipated that this John was related to James Fothergill born in 1699/1700 ?  Based on residence at Deepgill, I assumed that John Fothergill and jane Birkbeck were james' grandparents.  That Jane was born in 1636 and is not the jane that died in 1726 @ 70.

The Jane Fothergill who died at Birk Rigg during the stay of Jno Fothergill (Birkrigg-b) has caught my attention previously.  She died before James Fothergill and Mary Parkin arrived at Birkrigg.

HI:

If you are still looking, I have James Fothergill's parents as john Fothergill and Isabel Rudd at Deepgill, Westmorland.  His grandparents were John Fothergill and Jane Birkbeck --also at Deepgill.  This is supported by the Kirkby Stephen P/R.  This is a connection that Richard Fothergill hadn't made to my Birk Rigg-A family that he described in volume 2.  The framework that he provided for the Deppgill families is a bit sketchy, but it connects.

Hi:

I ran into another descendant of John Dent Fothergill and he just messaged me about the Storey family at Deepgill.  I thought tht surely you two were in contact.  Do you know David Cousins?

To: David Cousins
David:

I was glad to get the information on Thomas Story.  I have a Thomas Storey Marrying an Isabel Fothergill in 1799 and living at Birk Rigg.  Must have been a descendant of the Deepgill Thomas Story.

HI:

I descend from the Birk Rigg Fothergills and started my research with a family legend that our Fothergills were "of Carr End".  I did enough research on that branch to respect their history and develop an interest in the other Fothergills.

I've transcribed a stack of letters from the Dinsdales to their American relatives and found it facinating.  I would be VERY interested in receiving a copy of the Fothergill letters that you refer to in whatever form you make them available.

Best Regards,
