Thanks to all for your help. It's a friend of mine's family I was trying to help them find out about.

It looks as if Thomas was not born to the people who brought him up then.

The only other thing about his birth that they seem to believe is that he was born in Sale.

Anyway I will pass on the information you have all found for me and thanks once again.

Thank you very much for this.

Family belief is that Thomas had been born under a different name and have his birth year as December 17  1912.

The Manchester birthplace agrees with what the family do know about Thomas.

As  adoption didn't become official until 1926 I expect this may never be discovered.

I have a Thomas Mellors, born 1913 Manchester, Lancashire England in the 1921 census living in Chesterfield.
Please can anyone tell me where in Chesterfield he was living and if there is any evidence that he was not with his birth mother.
Thanks in advance ,
Pat.

Thanks Peter,
Yes, I did eventually find 'Ginger' and his real name wasn't Peter at all - that was an alias he used when sending messages home!

Hi fjgambl,
Peter Waller turned out not to be the person that I was looking for in the end so I haven't any more information about him at all. Sorry.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Great Barr Hall, Walsall

Hi Dawn,
Sorry but my Peter Beard (might be known as Smith) was born much earlier than 1940.

He was sent  to Great Barr as a young man and lived the rest of his life  there. I've never found either his birth or his death , there again I don't know where or what name he was registered under. My uncle who is aged 92 remembers him visiting their house  in the late 1920's early 1930's but could only remember  the name Peter - no surname.

I've still not managed to find much else about him - he was the child of my grandfathers sister and was born before she was married.

Our Beards come from Pershore, Worcestershire.

Just printed them both out a few minutes ago and they  are  both superb, Maggie.

I'm not going to choose between them myself  - I'll leave that to my friend.
