Lancashire Lookup Requests / hercules 186/1851 Liverpool census

Has any one out there got access to the 1861/51/41 censuses for Liverpool? If you have can you please look for the name Hercules on it? I would  be really grateful.

I'm looking for my mothers family who were called Hercules and were sailors and were supposed to have originated from Greece. Her great grandfather Charles Hercules is registered on his son's marriage certificate as a grocer. I am fast running out of options and would welcome any help or advice...thanks ekell3

Hi, Elizabeth Cain's mother and father were Thomas Cain who was a tailor born Douglas Isle of Man about 1823 (he was aged 48 on 1871 census).

Elizabeth who was aged 50 was also born on Isle of Man in Douglas (1871 census) but on the 1881 census her age is recorded as 62

there is another other child, who was also born Douglas, Isle of Man- this info is from 1871 census is

Robert Cain aged 13

In 1871 the family were living Liverpol at 24 Howe Street Everton

I hope this is of some help..regards elaine

thanks trish for replying, yes I have that info, the Charles you mention is listed as being an African servant so I don't  think he is a relation as we were all lead to believe that my mum's family came from Greece but as they were all seafarers they could have ended up setling anywhere. Re: St Helend I thought it might be St Helena as well.

I'll try 1837online as you can put the whole name in now. Thanks for your help..regards ekell3

can anyone help with any info on the hercules family? The last info I have is the marriage certificate of my great grandfather Joseph to Elizabeth Cain in Liverpool in 1873 when he was 26.

My great great grandfather is recorded on the certificate as being a grocer called Charles Hercules. Other than that I have no other info at all. My mother and her family said that their grandfather was Greek and they were all seafarers, but have no info, any records the family had have all been lst over the years around the family.

I have tried searching for all vital records but nothing has turned up before the marriage certificate 1873.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.....ekell3

Hi, I'm trying to trace my mothers fathers family whose surname was Hercules.

Her grandfather Joseph Alexander married a girl in 1873 called Elizabeth Cain who was born on the IOM.  They married in Liverpool where Elizabeth had moved with her family.

On the certificate Joseph's father is recorded as Charles a grocer, other than that I have no info on his birth or Charles

According to my mum her grandfather was Greek, all the men went to sea. There is a Charles Hercules apparently an African servant recorded in IOM but probably not a relation of mine.

Is there any trace of a Hercules in IOM pre 1873? thanks ekell3

hi, I lived in Bootle from just after I was born in 1956 to 1984 when I moved to the north east, however my very large immediate family all still live in around Liverpool.

try posting a note on the Bootle knowhere site, lots of people read it from Bootle area, it might turn something up

Also, if you live near Liverpool try a visit to the library in William Brown street whci has a large FHC.

I'm rather new to this so you could try the lancashire lookups page someone more experienced might be able to point you in the right info direction.

I've tried BMD putting a surname and date in and that' come up with the goods, there's also 1837.com and Church of the Latter Day Saints. I also found a site which listed christenings in Liverpool , when I find it I'll let you know the address.

In the meantime give me a shout if you need any more help..happy hunting...regards ekell3

thanks for this Donna, Elizabeth Cain is my mum's grandmother who was married to Joseph in 1873 and the address on the certificate is 24 Howe Street , so it looks like Joseph might have been lodging with his in laws when they married. He was a seaman and it looks like Elizabeth lived with her parents when he was away at sea.

I can't find any trace of Joseph's birth around 1846, he was 26 when he married. Also I can't find any trace of Charles the father. Do you have any suggestions at all? Also, how can I get hold of early census material like this for Liverpool, do I need to visit the FHC in Liverpool or can you buy copies? your hel is much appreciated thanks and regards ekell3
