Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Sign on Old Pub from Photograph

The maps are great, although it's difficult to see which building the label refers to. Surely not the huge building next to the Tile Sheds Inn label? As that looks like it's part of the station. Is it the building on the corner where the medical centre is now? It would be good to find another photo of it, I was thinking of sending this to The Northern Echo, as they seem to feature stories like this, and maybe someone else has some old photos featuring it.

Thanks for the link to the Lost Pubs Project, I'll definitely send this to them.

I've attached another couple of photos that I've never been able to identify. I think now, that these are of Joseph and Hannah too.

Thanks for your reply, after a lot of help from people on here, this has now been solved.

The pub is the Tile Sheds Inn, South Road, Bishop Auckland, and the family pictured is most likely Joseph Lisgo and Hannah Race.

It even says Tile Sheds Inn on the census, and also Hannah's brother, William Race, is boarding there too. Seems like the mystery is finally solved. Thanks to everyone who helped :-)

That's It!!

Joseph George Lisgo married Hannah Ann Race.

Hannah is the daughter of the William Race I mentioned earlier in the thread, my 3xGreat Grandfather.

Underneath Joseph, it looks to me like it could say "TILE SHED".

There's a "Tile Shed Lane" in East Boldon, and I have some ancestors from the Sunderland area

Thank you to everyone who has helped so far, I have posted in the Photo Restoration forum with a full quality image to see if anyone can sharpen the image, although it's waiting moderation.

I have found a picture of a pub in Nottingham, called The Old Postern Gate: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f4/36/1d/f4361d251b906d46a2bd7228108efbf0.jpg
Maybe that's the last line.

and I've uploaded a higher resolution image here: https://ibb.co/C612M3S

I have an old photo of a pub, possibly in the Durham area of England, that I am unable to read the signs of. If anyone is able to sharpen the image to make the signs more readable, I'd really appreciate it.

The image is here, as it's over 5MB: https://ibb.co/C612M3S

Thanks

No, that was William Race, although I have 3 people called Joseph Maw in my tree, none were landlords that I know of.

Quote
One of my ancestors was the landlord of the Welcome Inn in Cockfield, Bishop Auckland

Was he a Joseph?

Thanks, I've resized the image so I can upload the whole thing.

One of my ancestors was the landlord of the Welcome Inn in Cockfield, Bishop Auckland, which is this building here:

It's a different building, but he might have been a landlord of somewhere else nearby. Although I have no evidence it is even him in the photo.

Postern could be right, looking at it now, it could even say "Postern Inn"
