Dublin / Re: Thormanby Road, Howth

As far as I know, they were in Howth. Mary Lowry was born in Tonlegee, Coolock, County Dublin.

What would be the English version of Eoghan? As an American I am not very familiar with Gaelic.

I don't know where my Quirks came from. They were in Chicago by the 1850 census. They are a brick wall at the moment.

Hi Dermo!

I am not very familiar with other areas of Dublin, as I only visited there for about a week, visiting relatives. My great-great grandparents are John O'Brien (1818-1894) and Mary Lowry (-1896). Their children were  William b. 1847, Mary b. 1849, Patrick b. 1851, Margaret, John b. 1853, George (1855-1937) and James (1856-1926). Who was your Howth Grand-uncle?

My great-grandfather, James O'Brien lived in Heather Cottage on Upper Cliff Road, Howth. Thormanby Road is a main street and you turn off it to get onto Upper Cliff Road. If you are looking for info on this O'Brien family, I have much I can share with you.

World War One / Re: Please Help Identify this Uniform

Hi  :)

George o' Brien did not serve with the Royal Artillery.  Here is his MIC, he served with the Royal Irish Rifles then with the Machine Gun Corps:

So, this man is not likely to be George O'Brien, and he is not likely to be Valentine Flood who was in the Medical Corps. Funny thing is, I first thought he was John Joseph O'Brien, my grandmother's brother , who lost an arm in WWI. I emailed his granddaughter the photo, and she said she didn't think it was her grandfather. Perhaps it is John Joe?

Could you check for info on John Joseph O'Brien, born about 1887 in Howth? Thanks!

I think this photo may be my grandmother's cousin, George O'Brien. He was from Howth, outside of Dublin. He was born about 1882, and died in World War I.

I have looked on Ancestry.com's Military Records, and see quite a few men named George O'Brien who served in WWI. Would anyone have any ideas of how I could find out which records for George O'Brien correspond to him?

Thanks! Lynn

Hi Joanne!

My great great grandfather was Philip Manning (sometimes referred to as Mangan), born March 1818 in Tipperary. He immigrated to Boston (Charlestown) about 1847, then moved to Gilberts Illinois about 1861.  His mother's maiden name was Cooney, and her sister Judith was the mother of Patrick Augustine Feehan, first Archbishop of Chicago.

I don't know who his siblings were, and the Mangan / Manning references make it more challenging. Supposedly, the name was Mangan in Ireland.

Let me know if any of this fits into any onfo you have. Thanks!

I am thinking it was anywhere from the 1910's to the 1930's, because of the photo paper it was on. 1960's is too late for this picture, but the style of shirt may have had a come back then.

It is possible that one of the boys is my uncle George, who was born in 1902, but I am not sure if it is him.

His necktie looks short. Was that a style at a specific time?

I think this is a great picture. The teenagers look like teenagers today. Most look about 15 or so to me. Anyone agree? I think one of them may be my great uncle, because it was in my great aunts photo collection.

Does anyone have an idea of what year this might be? The men's collars are very specific. The photo would have been taken in Illinois.

What is on the forehead of the girl who is sitting?

Thanks for your opinions.
