I realise this was posted years ago, but I only just saw it.
Cuthbert was my great uncle. I have quite a lot of information about him and other family members, including many photos.
Let me know if this is still of interest!

Hi, Judy.  I believe the "Completed" on this thread indicates that the (my) original question was answered.  I'm Holly, Grant's wife.  I'm glad you found me on RootsChat!

Grant is gathering info to respond to your email--I'll work on him to do it sooner than later.

Gold was discovered in Alder Gulch, Montana in 1863.  We became a state in 1889.  1873 would have been a very exciting but very difficult time to settle here--certainly not for the faint of heart.  But still we have lots of unanswered questions.  Hopefully we can shed light on the American side, and you can shed light on the UK side!

Should you be interested in the children's names, they are:

John Bumby 1841-1873
William Bumby 1845-1913
Thomas Bumby 1846-1922
George Asquith Bumby 1849-1917

So wonderful to hear from you!

Since I posted this in 2009, we've run across his marriage certificate to Elizabeth.  The witnesses were S. Bumby and J.L.I. Woodcock.  They married rather later in life, he 47 and she 43.  Do you know if they had children?

Are you able to identify Cuthbert?  If so, I can send you a jpeg we believe to be him, so you can let us know if it is indeed him.

I've sent you a PM with my Email address.  Do respond if you'd like a copy of their marriage certificate or would like to help us identify him in the photograph!

Armed Forces / Re: USA: C 2 US Cav about 1854-1861

Thanks for the link.  I've sent a query to them as well as one on their "vendo" list.  I'll update should anything develop...

Armed Forces / USA: C 2 US Cav about 1854-1861
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 07:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone point me in the right direction, please?

My 2x grandfather's obituary states, "He spent the time between 1848 and 1854 in New York and Hoosac mountains.  He went south in 1854 and ran the blockade at Memphis, in 1861, coming north to Iowa and Illinois…."I recently came across a Pension application in Montana (where he moved in 1863 and died in 1905) that states he belonged to C 2 US Cav.  Presumably this is Company C, 2nd US Cavalry Regiment.

Union or Confederate?  I'm assuming the Union side, or he wouldn't be applying for a Pension, would he?  But didn't the Confederates "run the blockade?"

I'd like to find which state he enlisted in and any corresponding information about his time while in...  I've been unable to locate him in the 1860 Census, so this doesn't help...

Any information appreciated!

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Anyone heading to St. John's in Halifax?
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 23:44 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the info.  It's a long shot, I know, but we have no information on her family and are hoping a name is listed somewhere...

Can you tell me where is the best place to pull a copy of their certificate?  Would it actually be at St. John's, or is there another location where records are held?

Thanks!
