Hi ed_sue

That is almost certainly my William Leiper Archer. He was a druggist's assistant in Glasgow in Scotland in the 1901 census. He emigrated to South Africa in 1908.
Id be very happy to share more details with you.

  Cheers John

The Lighter Side / Re: "Who Do You Think You Are" Series 13, Episode #3: Liz Bonnin

I thought the programme was one of the best I have seen. I have seen Liz Bonnin on TV and wonderered what her ancestry was, the programme told that excellently. Ancestors from Africa, India and France, brought together in the Americas. Truly a citizen of the world. The descendant of slaves and slave owners, who are we to judge the values of 150 years ago?

Thats great, 3sillydogs! The name Wilge Fontein ties up with something else I found. It seems they ended up at a farm called Drumclog in the same area according to gravestones. (Drumclog is very close to where they were born in Scotland, so maybe they called the farm after it.)
The article from Mole's Blog was fascinating and fills out the picture well.
The family were brothers Robert and John with sisters Helen and Jane. The only record for the Boer war I can find seems to give two Leipers in the Imperial Light Horse with initial P so presumably not my ones.
Their widowed mother Helen Leiper (b 1821 in scotland) seems to have come out to join them some time between 1881 when she appears in the Scottish census and her death in 1899 in Drumclog in Pietermaritzburg. Maybe also their illegitimate nephew William Leiper Archer(b 1883) also came out in 1908 on the SS Galicean. Finding out about him would be fascinating.
I'm really struggling to find where to dig for South African records so your help is brilliant!.

Thanks
John

South Africa / Special Settlement

I have a family of 4 Leiper brothers and sisters arriving in Durban in 1880 on the ship Nyanza from Southampton. On the record from the Pietermaritzburg Archives there is a note against each of them saying "Special Settlement" They were farmers from Scotland and stayed in the area and are buried in Pietermaritzburg. Can anyone tell me what Special Settlement was or give me any other information about any of the family?

Lanarkshire / Re: Where is Holms (Holmes) Farm, parish of Avondale?

Thank you Sancti,

I have emailed you with my email address. Those names and dates tie up very well, I had forgotten to say that they got married in Avondale in 1845 so that ties up too.
I'll have a look at the other names and see if I think any of my people might fit them and being buried in Avondale. I may be back in touch in a few days.

Many thanks  :)

John

Hello Sancti,

I can't find any of your first lot, but among the second I have Wm Young (b c1816 Avondale) and wife Euphemia Leiper (b 1823 at Drumboy and christened in Avondale). I have no death dates, but William was still alive, age 85, and living as a retired farmer at Hill farm in Avondale, in 1901. Euphemia was alive in 1871 but I haven't checked '81 or '91. Are there any dates or other info legible on the stone?
I can't seem to get the right pairings for the other names.

Hello Pointer,

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

I have spent a lot of time trying to untangle my ancestors in Avondale, and Irvine valley. I have a few Leiper and Morton gravestone inscriptions from Newmils, or is that too far west for you?
I'm interested in Leipers (Avondale) Mortons (Near Darvel/Loudoun) and Wilsons, Flemings,Hamiltons, Lindsays, almost all of them farmers in the area. I'd be happy to share information with you and try to confirm some details.

Hello Kiko & Sho,

I read this thread because I live not far from Applecross and love the area and its history. However I didn't expect to learn how to get more out of Family Search and IGI !  That's such a great trick for finding a list of possible children for a couple, Kiko.
(Yes! I will then do a reality check in Scotland's People to weed out the minor errors that sometimes occur in IGI  :o ;D)

Technical Help / Re: New lap top

Les, Stevie,

Thanks for you comments. What I didn't say was that I had already failed to get any sense from Microsoft about the scanner - its like writing to Santa to complain about your presents!
The reason I was annoyed about the scanner is that its not a bog standard one, but one I specifically chose because it scans 35mm slides and 2" glass plate mounted pics that my grandfather made dating back to the 1920's. Great for family history stuff.
I'll try Vuescan when I'm feeling strong enough, thanks for the advice.

John
