I agree Cando. However, I like to check anything out that comes to me. The information came from a distant relative who received it from someone on a land council. I like things to be established with proof, not just hearsay. I have attached a photo of Annie's parents. I will post a photo of her in a separate post - they seem to be too big to post. Maxell

Australia / Annie Agnes GAINEY

I have just been told that my grandmother, Annie Agnes GAINEY  was employed at the Commercial Hotel, Warialda, as a coloured cleaner in the mid to late 1920s. My research to date indicates that she was white. Her parents were Hilton William Ambrose Gainey and Elizabeth Agnes Jane Gilligan. She was born in Tingha on 13 November, 1907. Is there any way I can establish why/how/if she was actually coloured? All suggestions will be gratefully pursued. Maxell

Australia / Re: Giuseppe DiFINA

It is entirely possible Ros. The Giuseppe DiFina I am following up passed away in 1932 but he obviously knew people or had connections with people in Australia and was able to pick up work each time he returned to Australia. I did not realise that there were so many Giuseppe DiFinas until I started this search. Most people in Filicudi would have been fishermen I should think - it is quite a small island. I'll keep  searching. Thanks for this link; it could be useful. Maxene

Australia / Giuseppe DiFINA
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find outgoing passenger records for Giuseppe DiFINA. Between the years of 1920 and 1932, he made a number of trips to Australia where he worked for a period of time and then returned to Filicudi, Sicily to his wife and family. I have found a number of incoming records in that period but cannot seem to find outgoing passenger lists. If I could find outgoing lists, I could perhaps eliminate some of the dates I have found for incoming passengers. To my knowledge, he worked in Victoria, probably close to Melbourne, in some sort of activity involving trees - possibly land clearing. As this man was my husband's grandfather, I would really like to add to his knowledge of the man's life. Any assistance or suggestions would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Giuseppe was born in Sicily on 23 Oct 1892 and died on 15 June 1932.Thanks, Maxene

Sue, I have just received the transcript of the marriage certificate and it tells me almost nothing!!Neither parents of bride nor groom are listed. The only things I could take from it were that his bride was presumably  illiterate as she signed with a cross and that they married in a private home with a Congregational minister. This seemed a bit odd to me until I did a bit of reading - apparently Orangemen were quite involved in the Congregational church in the area. The Thorpes were staunch Orangemen so maybe that is a potential hint that this is the John Thorpe I am looking for. I have also found some more info on Trove and am now pretty certain that this is John Thorpe, son of James and Jane Thorpe. I am now trying to establish if there was actually a brother, John. Maybe it was always James (the father) and John (the son) who were stonemasons and family legend is just that. The John Thorp listed in the Sands Directory is from a different family entirely. We have established that. Thank you for pointing me towards the article in Trove.

Thanks majm! Brian Boggs has done an amazing job of researching the Adam Lodge and has recently published a book on it! I have gained a lot of background knowledge from Brian's posts and the other contributors but there only appears to be a couple of people working on the Thorpes, and we communicate and share ideas. It would be GREAT if anyone could add to our knowledge. At this stage, we are pretty sure that John George Thorpe was the son of James and Jane Thorpe and we are in contact with a possible descendant. Now, I just need to find out a bit about John Thorpe, the brother of James Thorpe. All the information I thought we had has turned out to be incorrect - the John Thorpe who is listed in the  Sands Directory as a stonemason is from a different family. Thank you for mentioning Brian Bogg's work.  :) Maxell
