The Common Room / Henry Smith - Peterborough, Northamptonshire
« on: Monday 18 February 13 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, am hoping someone can assist.

I'm trying to trace my third great grandfather - Henry Smith (great start I know).

I have some information but don't seem to be able to locate him prior to 1875.

Here's what I have:
- born approx 1850 in Peterborough, Northamptonshire
- 1875 married Mary Ann (also known as Jane) Haragan at St Pauls church, Hammersmith
- in 1880 he was living in George Street, Hammersmith when his daughter Henrietta was born
- 1881 census has him living still in George Street, and occupation is listed as bricklayer. It also says he is deaf.
- 1882 living in Stebbing Street, when son Richard Henry was born
- 1884 son William Frederick born
- 1886 son Albert George born
- 1887 son George born
- 1889 son Frederick born
- 1891 census living in Hammersmith, listed as out of work
- 1892 wife Mary Ann/ Jane died
- 1893 remarried Sarah Woolsey
- 1895 daughter Eliza Hattie born - living in Acton Green, Brentford by this time
- 1897 daughter Eleanor born
- 1899 daughter Mary Ann born
- 1901 son James born
- 1904 daughter Elizabeth born
- 1906 daughter Emily may born and died.
- 1901 Census bricklayer/ labourer - lists as born in Bedford
- 1911 Census - bricklayer out of work

so apart from the fact that he's a good breeder, the only other facts I have are that is dad was listed on his marriage certificate as Henry Smith, blacksmith; certificates sometimes list him as bricklayer (journeyman) which I'm not sure what that means; on his son Richards' marriage certificate he's listed as Frederick Henry Smith.

Only one census lists him as deaf but because of this, I'm reluctant to believe he's the Henry Smith in the 1871 census listed in 2nd battalion 17th regiment and depot 1st battalion 17th regiment Aldershot Hampshire as a soldier. I am also having trouble trying to find out more about this person as well.

any assistant would be GREATLY appreciated. This has been a mystery several years in the making, and driving me nuts!

Erica.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Death of William Greig
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 14:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I wonder if anyone can help me find records of for the death of my g.g.g.grandfather William Greig born 1804 in Dundee.  He has been recorded on his childrens birth certificates as a fisherman and a captain.  He married Janet Mortimer in 1826. They had three children, the youngest born in 1831.  I have found her re-married in 1837 and her marriage certificate states she is a widow, so I am guessing William died somewhere between 1831 and 1836/7.  It could be that he died at sea, which would account for no buriel details or death certificate to be found.
But I am wondering whether there are any maritime records which show ships lost at sea or the names of sea captains who ships did not return to port.
I will be visiting Dundee in August and would like to know if there are any places with these kind of records that I could search through.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. Regards Brenda

Australia Lookups completed / Benjamin JOYCE birth records
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching my g.g. grandfather Benjamin Joyce.  He was transported to Australia in 1834. aged 12 years. and given a life sentence for stealing a pair of Boots. Charged in Middlesex, England for the crime.
I believe he was born in Frome, Somerset in 1821.  I have his parents listed as Benjamin Joyce and Sophia Lacey.

When searching for birth certificates I have found one but it lists him as being born in New South Wales.
The certificate gives places of registration as Alnwick, Butterwick, Clarence Town, Middlethorpe, Raymond Terrace, Seaham, NSW.  The registration number is V18212478 28.  Parents are listed as Benjamin and Sophia Joyce.

My question is "As he was a child convict and would have travelled without a birth certificate is it possible that the authorities have written him a birth certificate as a form

of identification. Considering the Australian nation was only four decades old it seems to much  of a coinci dence that two Benjamin Joyces could be born in 1821. One in England and one in Australia with parents Names Benjamin and Sophia. Can you shed light on this for me please.

Australia / Harold Kitchener JOYCE
« on: Monday 09 May 11 23:57 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the family of Harold Kitchener Joyce. He was born in NSW (Cowper I think) in 1916. He was on the 1937, 1943, electoral rolls for Wingham, Cowper, NSW and in 1949 on the Electoral Roll for Toowoomba Darling Downs along with his wife Ethel May.  He was listed as a mechnic in Toowoomba and a farm hand in NSW.  Eileen Margaret Joyce was also listed on the electoral roll for 1949 Toowoomba. She was an Hotel Keeper, but I do not know if they are related.
In the 1943 Electoral Roll for Cowper there are 10 people with the surname Joyce listed. Not sure if these are all one family.
Would be grateful for any help. Brenda

Hi Valda,
I haven't proven the two William Duddells are related.  I was just very curious to know what was in those papers.  I am a retired journalist, so I like to know everything. Thanks for the help.  I will check that knew info out. Thanks again for your help.

London and Middlesex / Re: All England Extracted Parish and Court Records Results
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Andy,
Thank you for that info. I did go into the sight and was able to read what I wanted. I haven't managed to down load it yet though.

You may be able to help me with some more info though.  The records I read were just a list of names and reference numbers alongside them. How do I find out what the pages refered to (by the reference numbers) say.  Apparently these are lists of people who had land and goods confiscated for their support of King Charles I or because they were Catholic.  I would like to know if and what my ancester had confiscated. Just cos I like to know these things.
As I am in Australia I cannot visit the Archives to look, but if there is a way of accessing the files on line, that would be good.
Thanks again for you help.
Brenda.
