I am looking for Herbert Stuart WOLFE b. 1892 in Liverpool, England.
He was a Purser on several Transatlantic ships.

I know that he was in in Wellington, New Zealand in October 1935 (he sent a breif message to his mother) and I wonder if he sailed on the Remuera crossing?

The ship departed London Thurs 22 August 1935, arrived Auckland Sat 28 September 1935. I understand that the NZ Archives reference is: Wellington Ref: SS1/187

Would anyone be able to check the passenger lists for this crossing for me?

Hi Elin,

I have had a breakthrough...maybe they will be of use to you too...

I contacted the Guildhall Library and they very kindly did a look-up in the Lloyd's Captains Registers for me. Amazingly, they found the man I was looking for!  :D
They provided me with his Certificate of Compentency number, which I was then able to give to the archives people at the NAtional MAritime Museum. Thye are now issuing me with James's certificate and application (£23 for copy) which I hope will provide some more clues...

Don't know if your guy was a Captain? But may be worth contacting them, I have found them wonderfully helpful:

Oh - thanks Karen! Fast work!

His marraige certificate would imply his father's name was also James Wolfe, and his profession is listed as 'clerk'.

Ireland / Missing Marriage - Mary Ann FITZELL & ? O'DONNELL
« on: Friday 15 August 08 14:02 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help - it's a long shot!

I am trying to find a record to confirm the date/place of the marriage of
Mary Ann FITZELL with ? O'DONNELL.

She was likely Catholic. She remarried young (age 26) in 1856 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool and her 2nd marriage certificate states she is a widow.
Various census reports show her birthplace as  Tarbert, Ireland.

She had several children with her 2nd husband, but I suspect that her first daughter Elizabeth, born c1849 in Cork, may actually have been the daughter of her first husband ? O'DONNELL.

If anyone can help, I'd love any information.

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd let you in on a related piece of family history whilst we wait on Herbert's Canadian military papers.

I have been puzzling over how he ever ended up in the Canadian military...and may have lighted upon something...

I had been told (by family) that his family were born in Liverpool, and had blithely gone along with it as my checks hadn't got that far...but this morning something came up which may give us a clue to Herbert's Canadian connection...

Herbert's grandfather was James Henry WOLFE. He was a Marster Mariner and Ship's Captain, so I requested confirmation of this from Lloyd's Captain's Registers. Guess what...no James WOLFE born in Liverpool c1833 as thought. BUT...there is a James Wolfe listed as a sea captain and he was born in Quebec, Canada in 1832! And to tie things back to Liverpool, he passed his Captain's Certificate of Competency in the city in 1856. The same year he married in Liverpool.  :D
I've requested copies of his competency certificate form the NAtional MAritime Museum to see if it gives up any more information, and I've posted seperately for information, in case any kind sole is visiting the Guildhall and can look up his voyages in the Lloyd's Registers.

I'm really hoping this is our man!

Karen - any idea how I'd go about tracing him in Quebec?! Sorry to sound so clueless!   :P

Occupation Interests / Look-Up Request: Lloyd's Captains Registers (Guildhall)
« on: Friday 15 August 08 12:05 BST (UK)  »
I would be extremely grateful if someone were able to look-up some information for me! I am looking for details on voyages made by James Wolfe (my husband's Great-great-grandfather!)

Name : James Wolfe
Place and date of birth : Quebec, 1832
Certificate number : C14781
Place certificate awarded : Liverpool
Date of certificate : 1856

I believe that deatils of his voyages between 1856-69 and 1871 are recorded in this Register: Captains Registers of Lloyd's of London covering 1851-1873 (Guildhall Library Ms 18567/15).

Any information at all would be most gratefully received!!

Tansk in advance,
Susie
