Those links were a wealth of information, thank you.

I have never really used Google books before but will consider it a useful resource for future research. I have also downloaded Ann Newton's will from the National Archives (free of charge due to Covid), I see what you mean about the writing, reading glasses will be in order.

 :) :) :)

Super result.

My maternal great-grandfather was in the St James Workhouse, Westminster from 1865-72 and he received an apprenticeship courtesy of a bequest from a wealthy widow, Mrs Ann Newton. It would be nice to recognise the generosity of Ann Newton in my report writing, does anybody have any information as to who she was? How large the bequest was and how many boys benefited?

This is just a request for anybody with connections to the servicemen named on the Steyning war memorial to please get in touch with me, I am organising a special service this year to mark the Armistice centenary.

I have just added 4x postems for the first time. Until recently I was unaware of this facility and I have built up a collection of unwanted certificates. So easy to do and so helpful for somebody researching that specific individual.

In my years of researching my family history I have met and had contact with many remarkable individuals who have assisted me along the way and this perhaps in some small way might go towards repaying that spirit of kind generosity.

Thank you for the tips.

I have found baptism records for his children. Two were baptised at St Mary, Battersea; one at St Stephen, Battersea; and one at St John, Hoxton, Hackney.

These records of course confirm his denomination as Church of England.

London and Middlesex / Battersea Churches

I am researching my great-grandfather Samuel Perry who lived in Battersea from about 1860 to 1905. I know that in 1879 he was living at 32 Bolingbroke Road, Church Rd, Battersea. Samuel spent time in the workhouse after being found abandoned, on these records his denomination is CofE yet he married in 1885 with an Independent ceremony (Harley Street Chapel, Bow). I want to try and work out where he may have worshipped but have no idea where to start.

It is clear Samuel has a deep personal faith and he threw himself into community work. I know from a letter of his to the workhouse that he became a Sunday school teacher and his church started a Band of Hope (now Hope Uk), in which he held three or four positions of responsibility.

Can anybody share some advice on Battersea churches during this period or where the best place is for me to find further information?

Thank you Andrew and Carol. By checking the census I have discovered there were in actual fact two Samuel Perrys living in this area, neither of which are the one that I am looking for. Back to the drawing board...
