The Common Room / Re: family research possible dead end!
« on: Sunday 07 November 10 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys.

It's been a while but I have followed your advice. I tried Coventry Register Office, but they had no birth certificate for a Marjorie Eleanor Fisher. Then I tried the GRO and got a birth certificate for Marjorie Eleanor Jaques born on 14.5.1923 which is the date I have for Marjorie Eleanor Fisher. Ann Jaques died in the same quarter of 1923. As yet I haven't had time to find any relationship between Ann and Edith.
Now how do I find out if she was adopted by Edith and William Fisher as official adoption didn't begin until 1927?
Thanks
Marion

Hi,
Thanks for your messages.
I'm fine about the discovery.  Arthur and Edward are Marjorie's uncles. I have her marriage and death certificates.
Marjorie's son is the source of the information that she was born in Coventry and her mother's diaries give me the date of 14.5.1923.
Will send for her certificate at Coventry register office before I go any further in the search just incase it was a clerical error.

Checked out somebody's tree that includes Josiah Griffiths and Emily Ford. They had 3 children Edith, Edward and Arthur.
Also Ann Jaques nee Griffiths is on a public tree that has her father as Joshua Griffiths. I looked at the 1881 census to see if Josiah had a brother but there is none there.
Interesting that Ann should die in the same quarter of 1923 as Marjorie was born. Possibly this is a lead.

Thanks everybody for your replies.
Edith was the daughter of Josiah Griffiths and Emily Ford. She married William Herbert Fisher at Queens Road Baptist Church on 21.12.1920, so that puts pay to Marjorie Eleanor being illigitimate. Not sure if Edith had a sister but she had two brothers - Edward and Arthur. Marjorie had no brothers or sisters as far as I know. Marjorie's son has never mentioned any.
I could send off for the Marjorie E Jaques birth cert to see if the date corresponds with the birth date in Edith's diaries.
I should mention that Marjorie is my half sister, and I didn't know that she existed until about two years ago. She died in the March of 1950 and I was born in the December of that year. Photos show a good resemblance between us.

Can anybody help?
I know that Marjorie Eleanor Fisher was born on 14.5.1923 according to her mother's diaries. Her mother - Edith Emily Griffiths - was reported to have said she was born in Coventry. Marjorie's father was William Herbert Fisher. The GRO have done a search for me two years either side of 1923 but cannot find a record of this birth.
Nobody in the family that knew these people have heard anything about Edith and William living abroad. Is it possible to find a birth abroad or if Marjorie was adopted? There were black and white photos in William Herbert Fisher's possesion showing oil wells and men in checked 'lumberjack' shirts.
Thanks

I'm trying to find the entry for the marriage of Hugh Burns and Sarah Brady. They were married on 31.10.1860 in the Blackfriars District of Glasgow, but I have had no luck in finding any reference.
Can anybody help please?
