Offaly (Kings) / Re: BRADLEY - Tullamore - COI
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 10:36 BST (UK)  »
There are parts of Offaly which are close to Laois, for instance the town of Portarlington is in both Offaly and Laois and Tullamore is close to Laois. Therefore your ancestors could have been born in Kings or Queens county. The village I live in is in Offaly but only a few kilometers from Kildare, Laois , Meath and Westmeath.

Europe / Re: Translating from French to English - Birth certificate
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 10:51 BST (UK)  »
Here is what I could translate for you.

Georgina O' Reilly born at 1am 12th September 1823. Daughter of John O' Reilly officer of the royal navy stationed in Dieppe at rue en quaire  he is born in London and Anne Suarr not sure of the surname born in County Meath. She has  been living in London.  I could not make out the place name where the mother is from  Bell something.  There are two witnesses mentioned Simeon Morel 26 a surgeon of rue Ecosse and William Peresseu aged more than 50. The father signs the certificate to confirm the details.

The Common Room / Re: Any 1921 census updates?
« on: Friday 12 May 17 13:19 BST (UK)  »
Regarding the 1926 census of Ireland I would not get any hopes up. There has been no news regarding it and the government has other priorities at the moment.

Dublin / Re: Catholics marrying in the Protestant church.
« on: Friday 07 April 17 15:12 BST (UK)  »
my husband and I married in his local Protestant church in 2000. He was baptised catholic and I am Protestant. We did go on an inter faith pre marriage course and had a dispensation from the local bishop.  I would assume in the past that something similar would have happened. Reactions from the community may have been very different though in the past. We have never had problems but neither of us are practising.

I think if it had been the other way round there may have been more obstacles but I don't know.

Hope that helps

The Lighter Side / Re: Celts descend from Spanish
« on: Wednesday 18 January 17 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
There was a program on RTE (Irish national channel) about two years ago about the origins of Irish people from the west of Ireland. As some of you may know around the Galway region there are some people who have very dark hair and are very Spanish looking in appearance. They did some DNA testing and found that people were related to people in the Basque country.

Also the Gaelic language and Gaeilge are so similar. My knowledge of Irish comes from my children`s homework and they are not great at it but even I can notice the similarities between them it is incredible.

Very  interesting.

The Lighter Side / Re: "Who Do You Think You Are" Series 13, Episode #4: Cheryl
« on: Friday 16 December 16 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
I enjoyed this one as I have enjoyed the series so far although I am not sure if Danny Dyer hams up his accent or not! Anyway having mariners in the family it was interesting to see what that involved if only my mariner had not died before 1851 it might be easier to find out about him! I was also interested by her great grandfather and his war service.

I did wonder if he had kept some contact with his other family or not? My ancestor did the same thing married the housekeeper after his wife had died and she was a much younger woman. It cannot have been a bad thing as he was in his 90`s when he died!

I would have like to have known where the photograph and ticket came from surely they could have just said that was donated by a relative and that would have been enough.

All in all so far it has been an interesting seriess.

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC "WDYTYA" Series 12 Episode 5: Gareth Malone
« on: Friday 11 September 15 12:58 BST (UK)  »
I personally did not enjoy this episode. Too much singing for me! I disliked the way he was disappointed when ancestors were not all singing and dancing. I know that most people want their ancestors to be like them however i disliked the way he looked down on the ordinary working family members.

I have found the series to be a little hit and miss for me this time. I enjoyed the Jane Seymour episode where she tracked her Polish ancestors although it was desperately sad. I enjoyed Derrick Jacobi also.

All in all it is an entertaining show firstly rather than a family history show and that has to be taken into consideration.

I got to do a little family history research myself this week in a way as my son had history homework and had to look up the 1911 Irish census. I don`t think he was that interested  and I already had the information but it is nice to see the resources being used and you never know!

The Lighter Side / Battle of Waterloo
« on: Friday 19 June 15 13:34 BST (UK)  »
I am just watching a documentary on Tg4 (The Irish language channel) on some of the Irish & Scottish who fought in the Battle alongside Wellington. It is a dramatisation of their own words. So I was wondering if any rootschatters have an ancestor who fought in the battle? I know of course records would be hard to find.
