Ooh, thanks for that! Ties in very nicely.

Just as a final update, I was able to visit the grave which had been identified for me by the PCC secretary. The memorial stone was quite large compared to the others in the cemetery and just inscribed MOTHER, with the date of death. Quite odd!

It is possible that he was not eligible to vote
That's a possibility, the eligibility criteria seem quite complex prior to 1918.

They come under this category

Parliamentary County of Wiltshire, North-Western or Chippenham Division, P C of Wiltshire, North-Western or Chippenham Division (England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932)
I do think F M P is quite difficult to search, however I can't find Alfred Duval until he appears in Steventon, Berkshire in 1920.

I don't know how complete the electoral registers are - a search for another ancestor in Rugby that I know is on the roll in the 1890s doesn't find him.

The electoral registers are on F M P
I'll need to search more diligently as I hadn't found them.

New Cottages, Middle Hill, Box has Henry James Pillinger in 1910 electoral register, 1909 has the same.

Thanks very much for checking for me - sadly not the info I was hoping for! Alfred is turning out to be quite elusive!

Interestingly his occupation is recorded as Hotel Assistant Manager on their daughter's birth certificate but Manservant on the baptism record.

1901 has New Cottages, Middle Hill, Box
RG13/1917 f37 page 14

It is in the region of a property called Ardgay

Thanks for this - I've now found Middle Hill in the 1911 as well, sadly no 'New Cottages' to be found.

Have the birth certificate for Joan Agnes Laura Duval now.

Birth address was in Trowbridge and a search turns up that it was at the home of a registered midwife.

The mother's surname was recorded as Duval and the address is given as 3 New Cottages, Box. I haven't been able to trace where this is, it's not found on a FindMyPast address search of the 1911 census.

What do you hope to gain by searching ER's for that one year?
Well I'd quite like to check the years from 1901 to 1910, just curious to know where he was living in that time.

The birth address could be more significant.  GRO online confirms mmn was Steptoe

2 more Duval/Steptoe births 1918 & 1921 in Abingdon Berks.  The 1918 birth - Paula Patricia - died shortly after birth

Alfred died Oxfordshire 1939 and Eveline is incorrectly transcribed as Dural on the 1939 register.  Daughter Patricial Valda b 1921 married 1940 Oxfordshire
Yes, I've got all that. I agree that the birth address would be very useful, just waiting to hear if the birth certificate has turned up.
