Armed Forces / Re: Please help - cannot find gg grandads death!

Blimey! Are you Diane? You must be - you've just emailed me with the details! Thank you so much for that! I tried to email you before we went to Belgium to see if you had any other info but I never heard anything back, thank you so much for forwarded the details, it really does mean a lot to me.
I spent a full day in Barrow Records office going through the WW1 newspaper archives to see if his death was listed in the obits but never found anything, ditto for herbert (although I do have his details for his death at Gallipoli.

The menin Gate was a truly awsome experience. My younger brother Harry played with Dalton Town Band underneath the arches there while the wreath laying service was held - it was the most moving service I've ever witnessed, especially when they played the National Anthem. I am absolutley determeined to get to the bottome of Thomas' WW1 service and what happened to him, even if it means spending a week at Kew!

Thank you so much - you have made a dull day into something special!
Thank you again xx

Hi,
Ref RG10/4247
Church Coniston
Hannah RIGG 50 Head Wid Charwoman B(can't decipher place)
Isaac RIGG 28 Son Mar Quarryman B Langdale
Agnes RIGG 23 Daug in law BChurch Coniston
(includes Isaac and Agnes' children).

Issac's father is named as George RIGG on Isaac's marriage cert.

There is an entry on a trade directory I found on the internet (I cannot remember the name of which offhand) which names the RIGG family as farmers residing at Harry Place in 1951.  I think I'm ging to have to get Isaac's birht cert  which might tell me more!

Hi Andrea! I have them from 1901 - 1871 and then it starts to get sketchy. Im after Isaac RIGG b1856 (give or take a year), living at Langale or Elterwater, his father George RIGG should be at Langdale in 1841 and 1851 but I cannot locate him (probably visiting!).

I know that there were RIGGS at Harry Place around this time, just outside Langdale, and I really want to find out if they are the same family.

World War One / Thomas Fisher buried Portsmouth cemetary help please
« on: Friday 23 February 07 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, its me again - I thought I'd make this a new thread because I need to rule out this Thomas fisher that I found on the cwgc website:
Name: FISHER
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Worcestershire Regiment
Unit Text: 1st Garrison Bn.
Secondary Regiment: Labour Corps
Secondary Unit Text: transf. to (282061) 629th Home Service Employment Coy. Date of Death: 02/08/1918
Service No: 28817
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 1st Central. 22. 46.
Cemetery: PORTSMOUTH (EASTNEY OR HIGHLAND ROAD) CEMETERY

Now, I'm excited about this one on a few points; Thomas had a brother Herbert who also served with the Worcestershire Reg and he died in Gallipoli, because I wanted his records too I contacted the Worc reg and they gave me a copy of the Worc. Reg soldiers who died in the Great War records and this Thomas Fisher is NOT listed in their records, even thought he served with their Reg - Why? Could it be because he was transferred to Home Service? Could this be the reason why my Thomas is not on his local war memorial?

Please could some very kind person reading this post have a check on any references they have for this Thomas and see if we can find his home town? He was born in Burnley but live in Barrow in Furness and was married to Lucy. Thomas serverd with the Cheshire Reg and was a sargeant until 1909. In 1914 Thomas would have been 40.

I have a feeling about this one!
Thank you,
Kathryn
