Shropshire / Re: Place names in Shropshire
« on: Tuesday 02 June 15 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
thanks for reply.

I live in the far South west and in Cornwall which was mainly a mining community, various names were given describing what happened in particular places  i.e  they were defined further than mine. Many places were described as Stamps, indicating the process which was carried out there.

Of course the first thought is that they were all named as banks for geographical reasons but being unfamiliar with the industrial processes carried out in the area, it was possible there was another meaning.

The other point is that the wider area was I believed levelled when being developed as Dawley New Town or Telford as it became and unlike Cornwall for example, there is not alot of the original infrastructure to be seen.

But if it as simple as 'a slope' thats fine - it answers my question,

Regards

Ronnie

Shropshire / Place names in Shropshire

Hi,

My paternal great grandmother came from Dawley Bank, or as it charmingly says in one census Dolly Bank! Her family were spread around the Boroughs Bank, Dawley area and a recent trip to the area gave us a feel for the area especially having seen the Squatter Cottage in Blist Hill Museum.

I do have a question however concerning place names. There are so many 'banks'  i.e Dawley Bank, Boroughs Bank,Lawley Bank, Ketley Bank etc.

Apart from the obvious geographic reason, is there a different meaning for bank possibly describing industrial use?

It would be interesting to know and if anyone can help, I would much appreciate it.

Many thanks

Ronnie

Cheshire / Re: Malpas
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 13:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
If it helps at all, my great grandmother died at 29 Old Hall Street, Malpas in 1954.

When we visited Malpas a few years ago, we visited the address which appeared to be a council bungalow which was one of several bungalows built around a central grassy area with a seat on it. I imagined her sitting there in good weather.

Her name was Mary Ann Pridding known as Molly. her maiden name was Hassle.

If you look on google maps satellite view, you can see the area just to the right of where B5395 is written.

Good Luck with your search

Well thank you all for that flurry of help and suggestions.

I have her birth, death marriage certs and she was born Esther Clayton Brammall on 8th September 1880 at Catherine Street to Eliza. I have a note that there was a family of Claytons in Catherine Street at 1861/1871 census but they had moved by 1881- also haven't established link with Elizabeth's family although there was marriage between an Elizabeth Clayton and Joseph Bramwell  11/6/1872 and  during the 1881 census, this Elizabeth's widowed mother-in -law Mary was living at 28 Catherine Street with daughters Martha and Sarah A. Elizabeth was with husband Joseph stepdaughter Martha and son Earnest. So I believe that Esther was born at 28 Catherine Street, but for some reason Eliza/Elizabeth has not named Joseph as the father. This could be that he was not the father or that there was a problem between them.Parents being Joseph and Elizabeth does tie up with Esther's later written declaration.By 1891 Joseph states that he is widower  and I think he married again  :but I haven't been able to find a death entry for Elizabeth, so it may be that they simply split up.As you can see my original post was years ago - perhaps time to revisit as there are so many more records available these days. Thanks everyone for your input, Ronnie

Hi- yes that certainly is possible. What I took as the ch could be a capital M and they later had a son Ernest born in Derbyshire - so thanks so much, I reckon you are right.

Cheshire / Parish of Newchills?
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone shed any light on this parish?  I have a marriage between Joseph Bramall and Elizabeth Clayton in Bredbury on 11th June 1872. The bride was of 'this parish' but the groom was of the 'parish of Newchills' - it is fairly clear but I am not very familiar with the region and haven't found it by searching on-line. Any help would be much appreciated,

thanks alot,  Ronnie

Thank you everyone for the advice - I will look into finding a conservator - it is  a very poignant letter and deserves to be cared for well,

Thanks again
