Evening,

not wanting to muddy the waters. RIF No 1818 would relate to a person joining mid 1885. Obviously a pre war regular. Therefore I think it is not your grandfather. (A great Uncle perhaps??). A medal index card does exist for him (1818) with a later transfer to the Labour Corps.

A 1900 dob does make it very unlikely that your grandfather would have served but not impossible...

Also, obviously the RIF was an Irish regiment recruiting mainly around Armagh and neighbouring counties..was there a family connection to Ireland?

Hope this helps,

regards,

David

Afternoon,

don't know if you are aware but a photo of each deceased brother was placed in the Belfast Evening Telegraph in and around the time of their death.

K,

read your post.

Did a wee bit of digging and whilst not wanting to lead anyone up a blind alley, these are my thoughts..

I think the family are east Belfast, Newtownards Road area...my reasoning is based on my own maternal grandparents who lived in the same area, at the same time.

The bulk of the Glentoran players, at that time, were local.

Boxing was, and still is, a popular sport at the Oval (the Glen's home ground).

Ledley Hall is the nearest boxing club and has strong links in the area, and, I believe is at least 100 years old.

'Davison' is commonly misspelled 'Davidson' and vice versa here..along with many names..

This area of Belfast was a major residential area for the dock, the shipyard and associated engineering works since the late 1890's.

Therefore, I can find two matches on the 1901 and 1911 censuses which possibly will help your search..

1901 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Victoria/Wolff_Street/1219805/

1911 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Victoria__part_of_/Wolff_Street/227062/

Note the surname change. I think William's mother may have been called 'Margaret Jane', but recorded as 'Jane' on the census returns.

Will do some further re burials etc and get back to you...

Hope this helps at this stage..

David

Evening,

not an expert but I would say Royal Navy Warrant Officer about 1870. Three buttons on the cuff, sword and double breasted jacket. (Dates might be a bit out)

Hope this helps,

Hi again,

sorry, meant to add the 1921 Armagh date fits in well if his was a regular short service soldier - 7 years with the colours and 5 in reserve. I see he was a native of Armagh and, at 16, a Cambric weaver- ( I had to Google it as I'd never heard it before - a linen cloth from Cambrai, France).

regards,

David

Hi,

that RIF number is consistent with enlistment around March 1914.

Hope this helps,

David
