I have nothing to really say of  his occupation the last bit of information I have about him is the 1871 Census under William Smechelder and he was listed as a Scholar there address was St Martins Lane, later there was an address of 4 Kemble Street.

I have Scanned the outside of the Document it has Various Stamps, Dates, I believe one say's Chancery Division theres an address at the bottom which I cannot make out

Appreciate all your efforts

Stephen

thanks for your time to reply......
I have tried looking for James Clark death details on findyourpast.com
but to no avail. He was born in the Strand in 1857 as William Schmalcalder
I can find him on the 1861 & 1871 Census but after that he disapears until 1892, he appears on a Death Certificate and gives an address as 4 Kemble Street, Strand, this  is were the Reynolds live as for the Clark Family they live at 4 Alma road, Enfield
As for a Big Estate I am not to sure but his Grandad was famous Mathmatical Instrument Maker who invented the Prismatic Compass, most of the Family lived in the area of the Strand.

Would he have died named Clark or Schmalcalder?

Hello Pauline & all,
Thanks for the post, I have taken my children up to the Science Museum to see the
Compass in question a few times, really great for them (Prismatic Compass, he invented patented it 1812) he is my 4th Generation GreatGrandfather, isn't the internet and the information it has amazing, I must admit though I did a lot of hard work at the London Metropolitan Archives to find the connection with the family and early spelling of surname, I can remember my uncle in the 70's trying to link and trace the family tree with not much luck, if he had known what I have now found out I think he would have been fascinated, really it has only taken me about 4 years to go back to 1460 in Marburg Germany with the Schmalkalder Family, have my own Website and still have that passion to explore the wealth of information there is.

Many Thanks

Steven

Hello bob and all,
Very interesting facts on discovering your German Ancestors, greatly appreciated.

After discovering my surname had changed slightly from Schmalkalder to present day Smallcalder I was very fortunate to have records forwarded to me from dates circa 1460 of Schmalkalder Families in Stuttgart, this was I suppose lucky just sending right emails off to people of interest, these points always helped
Have German Translation with Email
Be polite
Send to right area
This web site was of great importance to me
http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/VFWKWB/index.html

Still would love to find out were the surname Schmalkalder derived from,
Having a town called Schmalkalden close to where most of them were born, I would say the surname is of there, but were they given it or just took it von or of Schmalkalder and the von was dropped later

very best
