Pleasure, nice to exchange information with you. If you do go to Ancestry, look also at the tree by "angelawal152", as she is the living relative of this family and has undertaken substantial research. She has traced the direct line back to John WALTER (1505-1538) from Marden.

Good luck in your further research.

Further research this morning has added some individuals to the tree branch. Do you view Ancestry.co.uk? It would be easier to see the details there to save me explaining via this thread.

Yes, I have him now, with both wives. His father was Iden WALTER (1762 Staplehurst - 1849 Bermondsey) and his father another Iden (c1734 Maidstone - 1814 Staplehurst).

This Stephen had three daughters and one son by Elizabeth COLLISON. The son was another Stephen (1841 Marylebone - ?) who married Mary Ann DALEY. I have tracked this family until 1901 when they were resident in Kensington, but I have not traced Stephen or Mary Ann's deaths yet. As my tree is a single surname study this branch ends with the daughters, the elder of whom, Annie Emily married James SNELLING and lived until 1968. I have no more information about the younger daughter Elizabeth (yet!).

Are you a descendant of one of the daughters?

Kind regards, Ken

Hello again.

In my single surname study tree I have his son Stephen married to Sarah (maiden name unknown) and she died in 1835 at Wateringbury. I have not identified a second marriage for Stephen and he died in 1844, so could you identify his second spouse so that I may investigate further please?

By the way, the living relative of Iden's branch is Angela - do you have contact with her?

Kind regards,
Ken

Hello Heathgirl, thank you for your comments.

I have researched extensively the family of Iden WALTER (c1734-1814) in conjunction with another Ancestry subscriber who is directly related to him. You can view this tree titled "WALTER in Kent and Southern Counties" on Ancestry.co.uk, and search on his name as there are nearly 30,000 individuals in this single surname study.

I cannot link my branch to his, but since the previous post in this thread I think that I may have identified a link to the family from Otford and Seal. I have added Edward to five siblings who were all baptised at Otford. However, after contact with another (different) /Ancestry subscriber who is a living relative of one of the siblings, there is still some doubt about the pedigree.

The possible Otford/Seal connection would imply that the line may emanate from the Fawkham/Ash/Stansted crew, so much more research is required. I think that I shall have to spend more time at Kent Archives looking at land and estate records, not my favourite place. I have recently moved to Tenterden from Chatham so when I get more time in the new year I shall get back on the case.

If you would like to exchange information via e-mail, I am happy to do so but I'm not sure how to advise you of my address without revealing it to the whole of this site.

Jim, thanks for your post.

Indeed the will mentions "brother and sister Richard and Ann". I suppose that sister might also be sister-in-law, but nevertheless I have not found this combination in all the WALTER Groups in Kent.

The marriage at Eynsford records he was a bachelor and she was a widow (of Pettet BRASIER). So he could have been either a young man or an older man who had married later in life! I suspect your hypothesis is accurate - he is more likely to have been a younger man.

I have widened my search as his son John (if the connection is proven) married Mary ALLCHIN at Southwark Christ Church in 1799, so it is possible that the family had London metropolitan associations through trade or family.

John WALTER and Mary (ALLCHIN) went on to settle at Swanscombe and then at Bean Farm in the parish of Stone next Dartford. This gives weight to a possible connection to the WALTER families in Fawkham, Ash and Stansted from the 16th century as those places get mentioned in estates and wills from that era, although the AL(L)CHIN family were known to have considerable estates in Meopham and surrounding area.

Thanks again for your thoughts, all suggestions welcome.

Richard,

Postscript: Ian C. mentioned a burial of a James aged 74 at Great Coxwell. This was clearly the James who appears in the 1851 census at Great Faringdon, birthplace unknown (!), pauper.

There were a few possibilities for him in 1841 so I could not place him .. yet.

Thanks Richard.

My tree in Ancestry has gone up to James (b.1741 Little Coxwell) and his wife Elizabeth JOY. I have identified four siblings, all baptised at Little Coxwell, children of Richard and Ann.

I'm not related to this branch, but I am a WALTER! My clan is from north west Kent, yeomen farmers, and I'm stuck at 1775 when I believe my 4 x great grandfather John WALTER was born (at Eynsford). His father was probably Edward, who married at Eynsford the year before. Edward's will mentions brother sister Richard and Ann (for sister, it could mean sister-in-law I suppose) and that is why I have widened the net to see if I can get a connection.

Tantalisingly, Edward, Richard and Ann all pop up in the Faringdon area .... so never say never!

All the best,
Ken

Kent / Edward WALTER of Eynsford, Kent

I have taken my research on my direct family line back to:

(a) my 4 x great grandfather John WALTER, who died in 1841 (registered q/e Mar 1841 in Dartford as WALTERS!) aged 65 at Stone next Dartford - that places his birth year as 1775/6. I believe he was the Constable for Axtane Hundred from 1797-9 and he was a malster in Farningham.

(b) His wife, my 4 x great grandmother was Mary ALLCHIN, born 1753 Meopham, died 1853 Stone next Dartford.

(c) I believe that John's father was probably Edward WALTER, who married Elizabeth BRASIER (widow of Pettet BRASIER, nee ROBINS) at Eynsford in 1774. I have Edward's will, dated 1774, proved in 1779, and Elizabeth's after she married for the third time to John HILLIAM. In the will she makes provision for her son John WALTER (above) by appointing Sir John Dixon DYKE and Thomas DYKE of Lullingstone as executors and guardians to young John.

Despite extensive research, I have not been able to establish Edward's origins. There was one by his name who was baptised at Otford in 1716 and the name does appear a few times in the baptism registers of Marden.

Any information, no matter how trivial, would be very welcome!!
